Unless they changed anything still don't think you can without some public wifi accessible to the device. Same with iMACs etc, as they're not in range of a public wifi AP they can't physically know where they are without GPS etc.

 

Did you try to see if you find any nearby public wifi points that the ipad can reach where it detected the zone?

 

Also did you check Apple Configurator as I'm sure we had the option of setting timezones in there before, or don't you use it if you're using Lightspeed?

@kennysarmy ...... Looked at this years ago. We have our own internal ntp server (time taken from ntp.swgfl.org.uk) which is broadcast to our internal LAN. We have never had a problem, except when a workstations time is too far out i.e. by 7-10 years (bios battery gone, and they reset). All of our Apple devices pick up the time and time zone automatically. I remember we had to ensure that our time was not broadcast outside of our LAN, but apart from that......

We did try and don't think there are any public wifi spots we can access....

 

 

That's right we don't use Apple Configurator unless we need to reset a poorly iPad.

 

I'm just surprised RM have not come to the same conclusion as you....yet!

Knowing RM they're probably thinking it's the time not setting and wondering why But as you said before without it knowing a location it can't use NTP yet.

 

Will try to grab one of ours a bit later and try it if I get a minute just in case something has changed Maybe it does work nowadays, but would be interested to know how if you do find an answer

Well just checked on one of our iPads, and it knows it's in the London time zone, and if I manually select a new time then turn automatic time back on it instantly updates.

 

Whether or not it's picking up the ntp from the net or our local domain is harder to check since they are currently on our domain SSID (I really should get round to moving them off now that Impero isn't on them)
