TwistedHelixis Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Hi, when some teachers (not all) print using the built in Windows 10 pdf viewer or photo viewer it causes our print spooler to crash, unfortunately this does not happen all the time but just enough to be a pain. If I change the default programs to Adobe for PDF files & the older windows photo viewing system similar to the one in Windows 7, from the default windows 10 viewers everything seems to print fine. I was just wondering if anyone else had come across this issue? and if it is possible to push out the default programs used from our Windows 2012r2 server? BTW our printers are Sharp MFD Thanks
Daniel9291 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Hi, Just come across this thread as I am currently having the same problem at our school. We have Konica Minolta printers and been experiencing the print spooler crashing quite alot recently with Windows Server 2012 and Windows 10. After alot of trying to find the issue, I believe it is Edge causing the issue printing PDF files. I have updated Drivers etc but still having no effect. Did you manage to fix this issue? And if so what did you do? Im trying to figure out how to change the default programs via group policy so I can change PDF to open in Adobe Acrobat DC. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
TwistedHelixis Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 Yes I did fix the issue more or less by exporting XML file with defaults and deploying with gp. I'll post back tomorrow my steps if you want.
TwistedHelixis Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 I did find out the issue is with Konica and sharp mainly.
Daniel9291 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 That would be great if you could. It would be a great help. Thanks alot!
ricki Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Have a look at https://www.loginvsi.com/blog/login-vsi/518-fixing-default-file-type-associations-in-windows-10 1
TwistedHelixis Posted November 17, 2016 Author Posted November 17, 2016 (edited) Following the link above you need to On a Windows 10 machine Set the defaults for adobe and image viewer Open an elevated power shell and export a working defaults file from a configured machineDism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:c:\new\DefAppAssoc.xml This gives you an xml file in c:\new with lots of defaults but you only need the adobe and image lines. Mine ended up like this On server Copy the xml file to a folder on the server. In GPO setting located at:Computer configuration\Administrative templates\Windows Components\File Explorer\Set a default associations configuration file Attach the xml file using GPO and apply to your computers (Might want to setup a test user / computer) Edited November 17, 2016 by TwistedHelixis 1
Daniel9291 Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 This has worked great! Thank you very much for that hopefully this will fix the problem for good
TwistedHelixis Posted November 17, 2016 Author Posted November 17, 2016 It took a few days for the gp to spread around all the computers.
ricki Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 You might want to set browser to be or chrome instead of edge
TwistedHelixis Posted November 17, 2016 Author Posted November 17, 2016 You might want to set browser to be or chrome instead of edge Good point.
dry Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Sorry for the bump but has anybody done any more digging into why Edge isn't handling PDF printing properly? I've kept an eye on technet but the responses seem to be along the lines of 'send feedback to Microsoft and see if anything changes in the future, otherwise use a different browser' We don't use Edge here but it must be a bit frustrating to work around the issue for some folk who do use Edge (if they even exist!) Thanks
mavhc Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Can't we hit the printer manufacturers until they provide code that works? In the face or pockets, either works.
MatthewL Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Microsoft have caused all sorts of print issues recently and its by them changing things, no point hitting manufacturers Microsoft need to sort their products out.
mavhc Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 If their drivers were bug free and written to Microsoft's spec, it's doubtful they'd crash. Microsoft did sort their product out, and invented the v4/type 4 printer driver, and a compatibility driver for v3. Question is whether the printer manufacturer wrote one, and whether you have 3rd party software that doesn't work with it.
Lide98 Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 I happened to come across this problem on my Windows too. So I tried to change the default PDF viewer in Windows 10.
Lide98 Posted August 28, 2017 Posted August 28, 2017 It will be a nice trick to avoid the crash problem by disabling the default PDF reader. By the way, anyone of you who needs to change the default PDF reader in Windows 10 may don't know how to do it. Actually, it is very easy via Settings, Context Menu and Control Panel.
gaz350b Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 I suspect it's down to edge printing insanely large spool files. 30 page PDF on edge created a spool file over 1.5gb. This was causing our papercut queue to not display the select account pop up for papercut, as it would take 10 minutes+ to process the print job.
