Zelious Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Hello, I'm currently going through the process of getting a new pc but I'm not quite sure what to get. I've got my eye on one but it's quite expensive. I'm wondering if the components are actually necessary. I do a lot of gaming but is that enough to justify the price? Here's the link - PC Specialist Vulcan Devastator Intel i7-4790K Quad Core Gaming PC | Maplin
Arthur Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 (edited) That looks like old stock to me. If you are spending that kind of money I would go with a PC that has a Core i7-6700K and at least a GTX 1070. What resolution will you be gaming at and which games do you play? You could also save a bit of money if you didn't mind building the PC yourself. Edited June 30, 2016 by Arthur
Zelious Posted June 30, 2016 Author Posted June 30, 2016 Is this any better? PC Specialist Xtreme i5-6600 CPU GTX 970 Gaming PC | Maplin
bald_pig Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Maplins is a ripoff, that PC is discontinued stock from PC Specialist.
LeMarchand Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Hello, I'm currently going through the process of getting a new pc but I'm not quite sure what to get. This. Build your own. you will save money on buying the components yourself. Look at some mid range-top spec machines, do your research then build. I built my own about 5-10 years ago and saved roughly about £400 off a machine with similar spec.
synaesthesia Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Avoid Maplin. At ANY costs, Maplin are only any good for "I need a weird little component right now and I'm willing to pay 20x it's actual value for one" items. Currently, a core i5, 8GB ram, solid state drive, decent power supply (don't skimp on that, most important part of any PC) and an AMD RX 480 graphics card will set you back under £500 with a decent size and spec monitor if you shop round enough.
Arthur Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Probably just standard 1080p For £173.99 you can get an AMD Radeon RX 480 that will be perfectly fine for 1080p gaming and is a lot cheaper than a GTX 970. Like @synaesthesia I would also avoid Maplin.
DalekSec Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Build your own setup, three reasons. 1: It's cheaper 2: Easier to fix when it goes wrong as you know each part and how it's put together and 3: You get the sense of pride when you first switch it on!
aleach2 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 If you are looking for a pre-built gaming machine rather than making one yourself then Overclockers is a good site. http://www.overclockers.co.uk
DalekSec Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I personally buy my parts off of Amazon or Ebuyer, but it's each to their own!
bald_pig Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 just use pcpartpicker, it will find the best prices for you
Trojan Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 For that sort of money, this? PC Specialist Define X1 Review | bit-tech.net
bald_pig Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 This build would be cheaper, better spec than the ones posted, and swankier! https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/bald_pig/saved/xNcQzy
synaesthesia Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Swap out the R390's with 480s, change to an i5 instead of an i7 and you'll save a couple of hundred off the bat. You'll improve the gaming performance overall. Certainly no need for 32GB of ram in a gamer; only worth considering that if you play with VMs. No need for a 960gb SSD with a 3TB spinner, however if you get the right deal.. Ebuyer were slinging those drives at 140 yesterday.
Arthur Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Certainly no need for 32GB of ram in a gamer; only worth considering that if you play with VMs. Even without VMs, 16GB isn't much these days.
PotNoodleTech Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Egads avoid maplin - buy from a specialist one of the ones mentioned above or something like this https://www.scan.co.uk/3xs/configurator/overclocked-custom-gaming-pc-uk-performancegtkz170 I've got an RX480 it's great for 1080p and above and good value. I've also got an R9 Nano and that is a beast for such a teeny tiny cute card.
