WithoutMotive Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 Hi gang, We've had remote access for some time and it's worked for both Windows and Apple user with no problem. I've recently had someone ask if it's available for Chromebooks and, to be honest, I haven't tried. With Apple, they use the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. Windows, easy. Is there something for Chromebooks that will allow you to configure a gateway? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.
3s-gtech Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 (edited) There are solutions that enable you to use any web browser. We use this: Remote Spark Edited June 13, 2016 by 3s-gtech
theeggmaster Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I've been looking at the for a while, and 3s-gtech's solution of Remote Spark is a good one. You could also look at Guacamole and FreeRDP-Webconnect I'm also looking forward to the Play Store coming to Chromebooks, as you could just use the Microsoft Remote Desktop Android app (which I use on my phone).

I just hope when it does you can disable access to it and say chromebook x/user x gets app(s) x or id imagine any chromebook will become a crummy game dumping ground
jtotheb Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 Ericom make a pretty swish clientless remote access solution that renders the remote session in HTML5 so all the client machine needs is a modern browser. To see it in action you can go to https://www.ericom.com/demo.html and choose the "managed remote access to office PCs" demo. However, that magic does cost.
3s-gtech Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 That demo is outstandingly odd - do you think they've licensed Windows and Office RDP access for that? The solution looks good though, same kind of thing as Remote Spark. We pay £125 a year for ten concurrent users, plus RDP licenses.
rogerdnixon Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 We use Ericom AccessNow - see my latest video: It costs - but works very well and is important to use as ChromeOS is our main OS now. There is a native rdp client for ChromeOS called ChromeRDP: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-rdp/cbkkbcmdlboombapidmoeolnmdacpkch not free but works well.

The list is here. It looks like they're basing compatibility on age of Chromebook, not spec, as the Chromebit is one of the devices featured, and it's quite low-powered. I'm going to see if I can get my hands on an Acer R11 Chromebook to test how the Play Store will work when it's released to the Developer channel later this month. Google dropped Google Play for Education on tablets back in March, where you could control apps and push them to devices. Hopefully they'll be building some of that functionality into the Chromebook version of the Play Store.
