[ipad] Airserver = Bonjour / iTunes no more?

Please tell me this is true, because I can't believe my own eyes! Is it even possible?

 

 

I haven't tried a fresh install, I just noticed this whilst upgrading a client with Airserver (and therefore Bonjour) already installed, but I'd rather uninstall Bonjour/iTunes wherever possible.

 

I did notice though I was prompted to install this:

 

 

So I'm guessing that's the trade-off, no gain in actual install times then, but I'd rather have that on a machine than iTunes/Bonjour!

Bounjour (which you can install separatly from iTunes) is used for service discovery, it's a separate protocol to AirPlay itself. As long as you know the computer you're connecting to you can make an AirPlay connection. I'm not sure what difference that makes if you're trying to connect an iPad, I don't know if there's any way to change the behaviour of the AirPlay functiona built in to the iPad to make it connect to a given address rather than try and use Bonjour for discovery. Interestingly, seeing the Apple Classroom demo last week, it seems that AirPlay discovery (at least for Classroom iPads) can be done over Bluetooth, although I understand that AirPlay itself will still go over the usual wireless connection.

AirServer have an app called AirServer Connect (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/airserver-connect/id967004087?mt=8) that will scan a QR code on the AirServer software, it will then allow you to connect to the AirServer directly without using Bonjour.

 

We've found this to be pretty useful when Bonjour broadcasts can sometimes get lost in the network.

@Koldov I can confirm, Bonjour and iTunes are no longer required for the latest version. C++ Redistributable 2015 matching the architure of the OS is required, but takes less time to install.
