To begin with? 0 ;)

Before anyone says, yes I know it's trying to get the answer...

19 - 17 = 2

2 + 63 = 65

Just checked the twitter... some people think it's 46

It can't be anything other than 65 :S

If you do the maths backwards:

65 people on the train minus the 19 that get off (46) plus the 17 that get on (63)

If the answer were 46 then it just doesn't work.

Is it too difficult for Year 2 maths? I'm not sure :p

When it says "How many people were on the train to begin with" does this include the driver?

There is a definitive number of 'people on the train' in the question, so this would include every person in the total.

Absolutely, so the 63 would include the driver, the guard and any inspectors as well as passengers

that got me for a while I could of sworn it was 61 until I reread the question. This to me is more a question on exam technique than maths it seems to be there to see if you are paying attention

If the Driver is indeed a person, the driver is included. If it's an AI and not a person then the driver is not included, either way the definitive number stands.
