My 980ti gets to hot when playing newer games, eg on overwatch its 83C (i know this is in beta but still) With Nvidia announcing the 1080 i am thinking of upgrading to those but still not sure how well those will cool... So see the options in the poll!

3s-gtech Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Wait for benchmarks. 1080 is looking faster than 980Ti with greatly reduced power consumption, but whether the speed increase will be worth the spend for you is another matter. If yours is getting too hot, give it a good clean and have a look at your case cooling design.

I upgraded my case last month, a lot better at cooling, apart from watercooling there isnt much more i can do if anything. As for cleaning its as clean as it can be

I think full on watercooling will be the last thing I be, not 100% confident on building it and don't want to keep changing cooling blocks. Might aswell leave it to my build is done and then watercooling as final touch.
Sagima Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Just removing the stock heatsink, cleaning and applying a thin (rather than the wedge the seem to come with) layer of paste before replacing it usually sorts out any heat problems I have with mine.

I've never taken the fan off of a ghx card, (always a bit scared due to how much it cost!) I've brought 3 fans to add better exhaust to my case. If its still to hot for my liking I will try this

Might easy your fears or at least warn if you if its not an option and they've done something like glued it to the ram chips!

Rig photos would be useful. As someone who has 3 x Radeon R290s that run at about 50 degrees under load (watercooling) I think I can probably help!!!

Achandler Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Your CPU cooler should be blowing out the case not in, or your blowing hot air into a hot case. Also remember your PSU probably have an out fan as well! So you might have hot air going out your PSu then being pushed back in with your CPU fan. Think of the general principles, cold air in through the front, then expel all the hot air out the back. So your front fans are fine, its your back that need addressing.

I fully understand the airflow, but this cooler says it needs to be an intake fan, no way around it or my CPU goes pop! My psu has a fan but only uses it under high load, plus its encased in its own little box and is unaffected by any other air flow

I think i'm just slightly nervous of temperature due to how much I paid for the card, suppose the bright side of it is if it does blow I have a decent reason to get a new 1080! I will stick these fans in later and see how it goes.

Graphics cards normally run hotter than CPUs do so I wouldn't worry too much. CPUs and GPUs usually thermally throttle themselves if they get too hot to prevent the chips burning. They all say that, because realistically, air outside the case is cooler than air inside the case. However. The difference is usually negligible and doesn't really matter when you start measuring temperatures. I used to run my old H60 as an exhaust* and never had an issue, due to the aforementioned result that having it as an intake pulls hot air into the case. This can reduce the efficiency of other cooling components, especially a GPU like yours that doesn't push air out of the back of the case but instead circulates the air inside it (compared to, say, the 980Ti's reference design that exhausts air out of the back).. Realistically again this won't impact temperatures too dramatically, but there will still be an effect. For best airflow, I make sure my case has negative pressure. That is to say, more exhaust fans than intake fans. I find it gives better results, but it's debated back-and-forth all over the internet so I can't really say it's making a difference, it's just a design I've stuck with and it always does the job. Positive pressure = more dust, which we all hate. With a GPU cooler like yours you need to get that air out of the case. The GPU cooler you have is designed to get more air through more fins on the cooler, and this will cool it down better, but if you don't have anywhere for that air to go, you're just circulating warm air and gimping the cooling after ~10 mins. *My current H100i GTX is configured as an intake rather than an exhaust, but that's because there was nowhere else to put it.

I even have custom braided cables. There is absolutely zero reason for me to have them, except vanity. But they do look awesome downside my room is now a sauna when I play games. Which in turn means the air your pc intakes is going to be hotter and not cool your parts as good. You can't win! In all seriousness, though, it's better to have more airflow. Even if it does raise the external temperature, pushing more air through the radiators/cooling fins/whatever is always a good thing. I think I may go down said watercooling route If you're not confident enough to build a custom loop, you can buy kits pre-made for graphics cards. EVGA and NZXT make them, I'm sure I heard something about Corsair coming out with a line of GPU closed-loop too.

I think I may go down said watercooling route You will still have to transfer the heat generated by your component's which will be the constant no mater if your using air or water & air.... fans will still be extracting the same amount heat out of your case.

Exactly! See: Newton's third law of thermodynamics. That energy (as heat) has to go somewhere, no matter what cooling system you have. The point of watercooling isn't to reduce the overall heat your components generate, because that's not really possible, it's just to get that heat out quicker and more efficiently. The thermal conductivity of water/cooling fluid is greater than the thermal conductivity of air (for example, you can stick your hand in a 200°C oven and won't suffer a burn, so long as you don't touch any metal bits) and thus facilitates a larger transfer of heat over a fixed period of time. God Dammit Newton, it's bizarre as I'm sure it wasn't getting this hot last month, could of missed it as I was only really monitoring the CPU Temp and not the Ghx... I'm also not sure how much of the heat was me! As I moved the modem yesterday so it was wall mounted and was drilling holes and climbing around up the eves for a good hour! Most work out I've don't since I was late to see Civil War Edit: My room is in the Attic, which means I have 1 windows which when its open gets extremely windy (I do have it open a lot) but when it rains my Computer will get all the wrong kinds of water cooling...
