lmrogers Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Hi, I have to decide on whether to replace some old HP switches with either new HP switches or with Netgear switches. I have never used Netgear switches before and am just wondering on what peoples thoughts are? Are there any preferences on which is better or easier to use? Cheers
Blue_Cookeh Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Netgear has the most frustrating interface on the planet if you're trying to do anything remotely clever, and our Netgear APs started dropping out one by one a few years ago. We ripped it all out and put HP everywhere.

Not used a Netgear in work for ~8 years, usualy went the D-link route but again not use one at work for ~8 years. ( do have a d-link GS108TP at home and it seems reasonable for a small switch but no CLI. If you move up the HP lines to Comware then the Web interface is useless. and the CLI is totaly different command set to Procurve ( way to go HP!) Never had an issue with CISCO other than the initial outlay. But trialling a Meraki at the moment with an Idea to deploy to our 34 remote branches. Whilst there is no CLI the cloud management would be a real asset to our helpdesk. TT

I looked at it and I just cant justify licensing all our networking gear to stop it becoming a brick every 3 years :/
Geoff Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Ripped out our old Cisco and 3com kit for HP Procurves. Our core switches are Dells though.
ChrisH Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Fully managed Procurve all the way, I have a few web managed only ones and they work fine but they are a bit limiting from a management/monitoring point of view. I wouldn't consider Netgear over Procurve given the choice as having run various models for over 10 years they have all been rock solid reliable.
njc235 Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 If you move up the HP lines to Comware then the Web interface is useless. and the CLI is totaly different command set to Procurve ( way to go HP!) Remember that the Comware range was bought from 3Com so are datacentre grade switches. It's not like HP have invented a new CLI for them.
Davit2005 Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 All HP here or it would be Cisco if we could of afforded. Hp is brill, but get Managed and learn to do things from the CLI, you can save tons of time (but also make big mistakes quickly )
PotNoodleTech Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Procurve every day of the week and twice on Sundays. The CLI is really easy to use.
truebluesteve Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 We use HP but have been using the V1910's instead of the Procurves mainly because they are cheaper and the GUI is better. The Procurves are good (we have a few) but for our use I don't think they justify the extra money IMHO, and when you have 40+ to replace and your budget keeps getting reduced, every penny counts! The CLI is OK when you get used to it but it isn't particularly intuitive IMHO
