Backup times

How long is it taking you to backup 10TB from one server? It is taking us 3.5 days to run the backup using Backup Exec 2014 and Synology NAS over a 1Gbit network.

About 20-22~ hours for a full backup (8Tb~) when we run one (Obviously normally it's incremental)

 

Only running at 1Gb though as you said, but via Veeam

I hazard a guess that is a full backup right?

Can't you take advantage of incremental -> synthetic full backup? Backup Exec 2014 does this I believe?

It shouldn't take longer than 24 hours when running at full speed. I would have a look at the network utilisation while the backups are running and try to get an accurate figure for transfer speed. Also keep an eye on the CPU and RAM use as it could be overwhelmed there. If you use push backups, check the same on the server being backed up.

The biggest bottleneck is normally your write speed to the RAID cache on the end device. If it's a small NAS e.g. RAID 5/5 Disk etc you might only have lets say 100Mb write speed on the cache

Have you seen a gradual slow down over time? It could be disk fragmentation on the destination drives.

It would take about 13 hours to back up 10TB here, but that is using Veeam which is in a different league to backup exec for backup speed, and also on a 10 Gig backbone which helps.

 

I get about 110MB/s sustained writing to my Synology NAS at 1GB/s via veeam so that is still much faster.

 

So it's either you're Synology NAS config, or Backup exec at fault. I'd hazard a guess at the latter. If you want to let us know the config of you're Synology we may be able to help more.

Sorry to hijack but we too are seeing poor backup speeds, nothing to what everyone else has. We seems to get around 30 - 45 mb/s which isnt great i must admit.

 

The veeam server is a VM and the stores are buffalo terastations pro with dual 1gb connections.

 

When looking throught the completed jobs in veeam i see the bottle neck is coming from the source rather than the stores

 

Is there any thing i can do to combat this?

Is every body backing up over the network from the host or are they doing backupt form their SAN?

I'm getting similar speeds with Veeam to my NAS and haven't been able to improve this average even with support from Veeam. At the moment we have CBT turned off (long story) so backups are taking a long time to complete.

We get around 145mb/s on our backup using Veeam.

 

SSD to SSD though using a 1gb connection. Veeam indicates the bottleneck is the network connection.

Surely it's the time taken to make a snapshot thats an issue, not the time it takes to backup the snapshot. ??

Snapshot usually takes seconds.

I'd been having slow backup speeds so I created a new folder on my destination server and pointed the backups to there (Same device, disks etc just different folder) backup speed has jumped from 35mb/min to 433mb/min - job completed in 90 mins as opposed to 12 hours. Fragmentation sucks

Our beast of a file server takes on average 12 minutes to backup 500Gb. The old staff file server 36 minutes to backup 700Gb - both using Veeam over single 100mbit to a Synology.
