MkII Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 I'm trying to cobble together a Staff Acceptable Use Policy. Does anyone have anything drawn up that I can use? and/or please add suggestions for inclusion. I have a few ideas for things I need to include: 1. password security 2. data protection issues esp. with regard to students using staff logins/ knowing staff usernames and passwords 3. data protection/security for laptops etc removed from premises 4. student protection - rules of internet publishing 5. monitoring IT use 6. reporting incidents + school procedures 7. software installation/ licencing [North Chadderton have a staff AUP which can be seen here: http://www.webschool.org.uk/aup.htm ]
Geoff Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Draft something up and post it on the wiki then we can collectively fix it.
Ric_ Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 The Becta website has some useful resources about the data protection act - free paper copies can be ordered too.
MkII Posted July 4, 2005 Author Posted July 4, 2005 The safety.ngfl site also has some guidelines here: http://safety.ngfl.gov.uk/schools/document.php3?D=d56 and here: http://safety.ngfl.gov.uk/schools/pdf/d56.pdf
MkII Posted July 4, 2005 Author Posted July 4, 2005 Ok i've started my Teaching Staff AUP on the WIKI here: http://www.russdev.com/edugeek/doku.php?id=staff_aup [it's under School IT Policies > AUP's > Staff AUP] Please add your 2p
MkII Posted July 5, 2005 Author Posted July 5, 2005 Bump! anyone have any suggestions? http://www.russdev.com/edugeek/doku.php?id=staff_aup
tarquel Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Lookin good mark I wonder... How many school havent got Staff AUP's? I pretty much think that we dont have one or that no staff members have signed one if we do have one Nath
MkII Posted July 6, 2005 Author Posted July 6, 2005 [night is for sleepin' dontcha-know! ] No idea how i'm going to get everybody to sign tho' - y'know what teachers are like - not the most co-operative of types! If I just have a forced acceptance at logon, that covered both kids and teachers, and refferred to thier respective AUP document, do you recon that would be alright?
Geoff Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I also stumbled across and intresting (although dated) essay on AUP's in educational establishments. Its focus is on American schools but I doubt that matters much. http://www.io.com/~kinnaman/aupessay.html
russdev Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 to get them to sign it you goto sluts (sorry slt) and say if somone dose not sign it there login is disabled but then i'm head strong Russ

tarquel Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 getting so many edu IT techies together.... the school's and educational establishments' management should start quaking in their boots. My mate the caretaker was interested, after me taking about this forum that he's found... http://www.thecaretakers.net/forum/ Power to the support staff lol but back on topic... No idea how i'm going to get everybody to sign tho' - y'know what teachers are like - not the most co-operative of types! If I just have a forced acceptance at logon, that covered both kids and teachers, and refferred to thier respective AUP document, do you recon that would be alright? I agree mark that it aint gonna be easy getting them to sign anything, but the forced acceptance at logon is muuuuch nicer because they're gonna have to log on to the system.... ;) So cunning that we'll have to win *this* one lol. Nath
RobC Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 No idea how i'm going to get everybody to sign tho' - y'know what teachers are like - not the most co-operative of types! If I just have a forced acceptance at logon, that covered both kids and teachers, and refferred to thier respective AUP document, do you recon that would be alright? Ok, a couple of possibles here... Firstly, you've already posted the link to your solution. Using the AUP logon acceptance program in the downloads forum. The only problem is... how to have different AUPs for staff and pupils. Two separate installs! All you need to do is put the relevant .rtf or .txt file in each install, then either use separate Start Menu's for staff & pupils using Folder Redirection, or knock up a suitable logon script to work out who's logging on & run the correct install. Well, it was just a thought...
MkII Posted July 7, 2005 Author Posted July 7, 2005 Thanks Russ. I recon the one text [in the logon prog] would cover all users - staff and students. I intend to do both - force signing of AUPs - account disabled until letter recieved, and click to accept at every logon. Interesting I just learnt [thanks Geoff! ] that consent to intercept email is required by law - so that'll go into both.
russdev Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 as is consent to monitor computer and internet usage... Russ
Ric_ Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 Consent to monitor anything is necessary - therefore the use of VNC, etc. requires consent. Consent does not necessarily mean asking the users and only being able to monitor the ones that give consent. It can mean informing the users that you will be monitoring them and giving them the option to opt out of having access.
russdev Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 sorry meant inform it was early only just woekn up Russ
GrumbleDook Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 A bit of a late followup question here ... We have the same AUP for staff and students ... and we include in it about not using the school systems for personal financial gain. This is a clause to stop people putting things on auction sites etc and then not handing over the goods, which would then mean it being tracked back to the school and all hell breaking loose and parent of X denies that their little darling would ever do that. But we now have the problem of the admin staff are finally going to be filtered in their internet access ... and some of them use ebay ... alot. We know that this is a decision that we (ok ... mainly me) have made, but it is also there to make sure *all* staff work to the same AUP. Teachers don;t have a problem but the admin staff are likely to kick up a stink. I have be trying to decifer the remodelling stuff to find anything that says that all staff have to have equal access to facilities, and since we limit what teachers do due to their proximity with students we would also have to apply the same to admin staff to keep things "equal". Has anyone actually come across any documentation (national agreement, NGfL, NCSL ...)? I'll post our AUP in a few mins too.
Dos_Box Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 How about a compromise? Just allow the staff room and office computers access to EBay. That way you get to remove it from pupils eyes yet still keep the staff happy. Its better than having them pour paint strippper over your car whilst you're in the office.
GrumbleDook Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 The filtering we use is per-user (Symantec Web Security ... once it was the bee's knees ... now it has become the dog's dropping) ... so it doesn't really matter where someone is, that get the same policies applied to them. We can go for extra layers of filters to allow for both (allow it via SWS, but block certain places via the additional filtering on the firewall) but this adds an extra layer of confusion when trying to track down why a perfectly good site happens to be blocked. Teachers are happy with it ... they actually understand why the policy is there ... the issue is that the admin network was never filtered and now we have combined everything to a single domain they are going to have to get used to having workstations locked down so they cannot install whatever they want, can only use the school email, have to watch what language they use in emails etc ... Admin staff have wanted to be treated as equals to teachers for a long time (as they fully deserve to be) but sometimes it means them having to give up a perk, not acquiring one.

MkII Posted August 17, 2005 Author Posted August 17, 2005 At Powys we have filtering set at county level - and that's the way I like it - it means any legal responsibility is thiers. County have a policy to deny all staff in the county access to comercial sites as many staf were spending work time shopping. The county have included this in thier AUP. The interesting point that you may be interested in is that these restrictions are lifted at lunchtimes and after 5pm. The school filter is seperate, we ARE allowed commerce sites! Although our AUP does state something about the misuse of such sites.
Ric_ Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 If filtering is per user, why not allow 'admin staff' access to ebay (not during working hours ) - then adjust your staff AUP to say that excemptions to the filter may be made for those users that are not around kids. Besides... does it not beg the question of what they are doing all day if they have time to run ebay businesses? Surely the school will frown upon their staff running their own little businesses during office hours - I'm sure they'd say something if you started building computers for people while at work!
russdev Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 yes in fact in leices you can be sacked for it... mis use of company propertie... russ
