Wonder what the terms are for this free upgrade.

I was upgraded to the 2MBps, many moons ago, when it was Telewest - I didn't do anything, they just sent me an email telling me they were going to do it - and they did

don't know if i even pay for my broadband... it's 25quid a month and i have the XL TV package and some sort of phone thing with unlimited minutes off peak... meh.. their loss!

The upgrade to 50Mb will cost 47 quid IIRC.

 

There is a beta section on the web for their site. There's no direct link to it though.

We're on a "20meg" line. The most I get out of it (and we're talking at 0300hrs) is 4meg.

 

I'm going to be calling them up soon because my housemate who actually is the account holder is refusing to do it but says I can if it bothers me that much. Tbh...the amount we pay for this joke of a line, it bloody well /does/ bother me!

That was the free upgrade which came about 6 weeks after they'd hiked the price by 3 quid/month! I find the quality of their product great, but they are pricey. We hammer our connection more than most families would and I still think 20Mbit is excessive for our needs. I doubt I'd notice any speed increases over about 8Mbit.

 

As for the 50Mbit increase which was originally due Q2 of this year, it wouldn't surprise me if they do the same - jack the prices, bump you up, then remove the 20mbit deal forcing you to choose between upgrade and downgrade.

True , that sucks. I'm on the 20mb line and I average speeds of 16-18mb, never had it higher than 18.6mb. But happy with that.

Well, I'm paying Rupert Murdoch £10 a month for up to 16MB and as I'm virtually sitting on my local exchange I'm quite happy. Was with VM but jumped ship as £25 a month for 4MB was a joke. Don't like the hippy at the helm either.

At home we have the 20mb service but because we've got one of the old Home 120 modems, I dont think we can actually get the full 20Mb...and Virgin have never offered to send out a new one

 

Normally get about 13meg fairly constantly though. Only niggles are when Im downloading from newsgroups it cuts out completely (like everythign, not just NG traffic) for a few minutes every half hour or so - so much for them saying they dont use traffic shaping

And the 4GB 'limit' before the speed is halved is quite annoying...especially when I read it wouldnt apply off peak, but low and behold it does the exact same thing on the weekends...

The problem is they don't know you have an old modem. If you phone up tech support, they'll send out an engineer with a new modem.

I've always had stellar performance from Virgin and I've been with them since the 512k/s days and on every speed plan

 

Downloading from newsgroups is a constant 450-480KB/s on my 4Mb connection. Can't ask for more than that really.

The 50Mb is great. It's the only one that doesn't have any throttling during peak hours:

You do need a new cablemodem & router (bit of a bugbear here with my latter - it having a fairly-hefty ACL). I got my upgrade from 20Mb gratis for six months, but I did have to pay for the installation. Don't forget the unlimited off-site storage (V Stuff) & 100 free photos (from Snapfish) per month. FYI, all Virgin accounts get a VStuff/Snapfish allocation (according to a sliding scale) although (as per usual) it has been problematic for many users.

 

Now all they need to do is up their Usenet retention to something more acceptable - although speed is good, 7 days is prety useless. I recently switched to Astraweb; 717 days, 99+% retention & 20 maxed-out SSL connections for £7? A third of Giganews' price for a virtually-identical service. Pretty-much a must-have...

I'm on 20mb as well but we get 20mb don't think there are many others using it, so i'm sure it will go down in the future....the problem I have is the cost of phone calls! I have to re-open my skype external account as it was costing a small fortune.
