Cancel LEA and SWGFL Broadband

Hi everyone

 

Im just about to cancel our LEA provided broadband and SWGFL connection and i had a phone call from the LEA (scaremongering i think) saying that currently the SWGFL is responsible for any penalties as a result of a data leak and and that govenors would be responisble if we went elsewhere.

 

He also said that we would have to pay the Offcom licence fee that runs from April to April. Does all this see correct? Its the first i know about the Data protection leak and the Offcom charge!!!!!

The governors are responsible for the choice of broadband and ultimately accountable. The DFE says though that so long as your governors choose "an RBC or recognised educational Internet Service provider" then you'll be fine.

 

I'm pretty sure this guidance is on the DFE and NEN's website.

 

No idea what they are on about ref Ofcom licence fee. You don't have to pay a licence fee to Ofcom to have broadband. The only time you ever would is if you use an outdoor point to point wireless connection and that's only £50 a year I think.

 

I generally recommend customers to ignore the scaremongering from the LA. Load of rubbish!

The governors are NOT responsible for the choice. That is definitely an operational decision made by the school!

 

The governors are responsible for safeguarding or rather for satisfying themselves that the school is meeting its safeguarding remit. They should be challenging whether the school's option is the right choice and provides what is needed, but they should not be choosing it!

Can't see how having an RBC is going to prevent Data Leak.

 

My old place moved out in 2008, 1st of many to dump the RBC.

You haven't mentioned which school you're from...you may well receive a connection provided by your LA, rather than SWGfL directly, as many schools in the region still do. I can't comment on what has or hasn't been said in relation to a data leak and I certainly don't know anything about an Ofcom licence fee, but I'd be very happy to talk to you about the SWGfL services. If you'd like to call the SWGfL Office on t.0845 6013203 and ask to speak to me (Julia) we can run through things.

And even then that's only if you have something other than a 2.4ghz or 5ghz link or if you radiate more than 100mw.

We had similar scaremongering with our LEA on various topics and told them where to shove it. We now have a go live date set with SchoolsBroadband.

 

I won't mention the fact our LEA expect us to send their equipment back... which is locked in a cabinet they lost the key for...

Ditto to Dave from schoolsbroadband. We have been hearing these same type of scare tactics for the past thirteen years, and they are pretty much universally utter rubbish. Also (like Dave) as a company who are registered with Ofcom, I have no idea what they are on about from a licence, apart from potentially the wireless side. We have moved hundreds of schools over to us from SWGFL in the past few years, and if you'd like to speak to any of them to find out exactly what happened after they left just PM me and I'll let you know the nearest ones to you.
