elsiegee40 Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 When an IEB gets put in place things have gone seriously wrong with governance and the leadership and management of the school. Who is on that IEB seems a bit of a mystery to me and you get good ones and bad ones. Unfortunately they all seem to be under the direction to academise the failing school these days.
bobsmith Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 When an IEB gets put in place it is because the secretary of state has decided to convert that school. It may coincide with a perceived failure of governance or leadership and management. Don't imagine that has changed post Gove...

sparkeh Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 For those that are interested, Nicky Morgan will be (hopefully) grilled by the Education Select Committee at 2.30pm today. You can watch live here: Parliamentlive.tv - Education Committee
sparkeh Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Another interesting PMQs: David Cameron “Those schools that want to go on using local authority services are free to do so. I’m very clear – academies are great, academies for all is a good policy.” Bit a change in rhetoric from when he wanted LAs running schools David Cameron “a thing of the past”
Ephelyon Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 He means the services buyback such as payroll etc. - he doesn't mean any oversight or control.
mikeprice Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Another interesting PMQs: Bit a change in rhetoric from when he wanted LAs running schools From what you just said - "free to go on using LA services" - but does he mean after converting to an academy??? sneaky b*******'s - never know what they mean
sparkeh Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 He means the services buyback such as payroll etc. - he doesn't mean any oversight or control. Really? What about the idea that LAs will be given an easy route to set up a MAT that been widely reported.
Ephelyon Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Reported, but not confirmed, although many would welcome it. The fact that many academies (particularly SATs) will choose to keep using the Local Authority for some central services even though they are no long required to is now well-established.
sparkeh Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 So Nicky Morgan's appearance before the Select Committee was quite interesting in that it appears that the Government isn't really sure what is going to appear in the Queen's Speech. From http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-36150084 Mrs Morgan said that many of the proposals could be delivered without changes to the law - and that at present she could not say "what's in the detail of the legislation". Labour's shadow education secretary, Lucy Powell, said it was still unclear whether the government intended to seek new powers. "Unless there is explicit legislation in the Queen's Speech to force good and outstanding schools to become academies, schools should take the message loud and clear that the government is back-pedalling."

LeMarchand Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I'm thinking that maybe the plan was to scare a few more heads into voluntarily going for it. I'm pretty sure one of mine is going to .
localzuk Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Most of the schools around here are now either Academies, or soon will be. I can only think of a small number which haven't made the jump too, and they're struggling financially now. Many are making the jump into a MAT as its felt that it provides a bit more financial security to the schools.

Do you happen to know how much extra funding MAT's get to pay for the extra level of management etc? I worry that the trust is compelled to spend more on the RI/Good schools at the expense of the Good/Outstanding ones in the chain.

I worry that the trust is compelled to spend more on the RI/Good schools at the expense of the Good/Outstanding ones in the chain. Don't think they get anything extra for that. They get money to aid with the conversion, and sponsoring trusts can then apply for extra money if its really needed I think, but there's no specific pot for the management.

I bet the Govt. will add extra money for MAT's with the funding review to 'encourage' them.
localzuk Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I bet the Govt. will add extra money for MAT's with the funding review to 'encourage' them. I'll go further and say they'll likely make it more difficult for local authorities to be seen as performing well too.
timbo343 Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Just heard that "they" have u-turned it and i said it all along, sometimes i think i should have a crystall ball.
CyberNerd Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I'll go further and say they'll likely make it more difficult for local authorities to be seen as performing well too. yes, deep within the burying bad news over the local/mayoral elections, I heard (radio) that if a LA is performing badly they will still MAT the schools no matter how good/outstanding they are.
sparkeh Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 yes, deep within the burying bad news over the local/mayoral elections, I heard (radio) that if a LA is performing badly they will still MAT the schools no matter how good/outstanding they are. I don't think that we should see this as a u-turn but a change of tactic. It will be made harder and harder for LAs to hold on to its schools under this new arrangement. The outcome will probably be the same but might take longer.
sparkeh Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) With luck, Camoron won't have that time... Well who knows what will happen after the brexit vote?! The fallout could change the direction of the party entirely. Edited May 7, 2016 by sparkeh
