genesis Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 (edited) Hi One of the student has brought his own Tablet to setup on our school network, so that he can access the student internet and his Home drive. I observed the tablet is a Windows 10 Home edition Ram 1GB Processor: Intel® Atom CPU [email protected] 32bit OS Firstly , I cannot join the tablet to the domain. Currently we have Windows 7 on our network. We have Microsoft EES and thinking of reinstall the tablet with Windows 7 professional edition. Will this be a good idea. Please suggest. Thanks Edited February 19, 2016 by elsiegee40
elsiegee40 Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 1. Do you do BYOD at your school? 2. Will you be invalidating the warranty by wiping it and reinstalling Win 7? 3. My gut instinct is "don't do it"! Even if you have BYOD at the school, I would only take control of a device owned by a third party in VERY exceptional circumstances. The ramifications of maintenance and issues surrounding future problems are far too large without legal disclaimers being understood and signed by parents.
VeryPC_Colin_M Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 If you install Win 7 on your students Win 10 Tablet, I highly doubt they'll thank you for it, whether it provides access to the intranet or not. I agree with @elsiegee40, don't do it and she points out a couple of other good reasons why not to above. Ta, Col
genesis Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 I had promised the parent without even thinking of all theseaspects. Now I think it is as additional Job We don’t have BYOD in our School, What about if Leave thetablet with windows 10 as it is. Secondly connect to our school wireless network and on thetablet map his Home drive- Will itremember the connection , once it is restarted.
eddyc Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I don't think you should do it either. Could you not join the device onto your wifi and then use HAP or RDP to access internal services? That is what we do here. Guest WiFi access, VLE is open to outside anyway and RDP for those who need program access.

The moment you add a students personal device to your wireless I think your opening yourself up for all sorts of potential problems as you don't have the necessary policies in place to police this properly. Your also going to be stuck when everyone else asks you to do the same thing. If this is the route you want to go down I'd have thought you'd be best looking at implementing a proper BYOD strategy or you could really tie yourself in knots. 2
3s-gtech Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Not a great idea, IMO. It should run Windows 8.1 no problems, but going back further becomes difficult due to the age of Windows 7 and when that tablet was released. Windows 7 is also rubbish with a touch interface IMO. It's a fair bit of work getting your network ready to run 8.1 or 10, but it is worth doing now. Took me about a week each time - GPOs, profiles, test test test. Still not 100% happy with 10 but 8.1 is easier.
elsiegee40 Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I think this request cannot be implemented without a full and frank discussion with SLT. Sometimes you have to admit you were wrong. And you have to explain to them why this cannot happen. It's OK to say that you hadn't realised all the implications of Data Protection and Safeguarding. The implications for network security are high. The only way you can let this device on the network, given that you are not setoup for BYOD, is to take it over and force it to be subject to all the restrictions of a school device. I am sure that neither parent or child will want this... you certainly don't.
steveg Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 If it's a student owned device, then you wouldn't be licenced to install a different os under the school's ees agreement as far as I know? I know the office licence permits students and staff to install, but pretty sure it doesn't extend to the operating system licences. Steve 1
ricki Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 You need to speak to head and explain students are requesting this and you need a guest wireless separated from normal network with rdp server for them to dial into. Promote staff can also use this from home. But think it through before talk and think through all implications and costs
genesis Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 Thanks so much guys for all your suggestions. You have been really helpful. Much appreciated.
Javik Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) I don't think you need to actually join it to the domain. All you really need to do is create a file share on the desktop of the student device. Map Network drive to drive letter. Path: \\server\share\path\to\student\home\directory Logon as user: Domain\username Reconnect at logon Put icon shortcut on the desktop. They now have access to their home directory, from their non-joined Windows device. Note, this does not work if you use a passwordless public/guest wifi that is firewalled off from your internal servers, and which only permits filtered Internet access. In that situation you would need a separate password-protected wifi SSID that permits file server access. MAC filtering would be a good idea so that only authorized devices have access to this privilege. Edited March 2, 2016 by Javik
