pslater Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 We've got by without buying any more copies of Photoshop for a couple of years and before that we would just buy the odd licence here and there, but are now looking at the CC options and it seems like a pretty big price leap per year based on full time employees. What are other peoples experiences? All this for people who think they need it to resize images...
Steve21 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Not bothered upgrading from CS5.5. Don't need anything in the new version (At least "yet") If it's just photoshop you're after have you considered if photoshop elements will do it for you? Can still buy that standalone for £50~ a license for education (Obviously a freeware would be better but if it's that photoshop title ) Steve
TechMonkey Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 GIMP? Does everything Photoshop does at a low low price of zilch? The only people that will moan is those that simply MUST use Photoshop (as that is the only name they know) or die hards who will find the interface different.
Michael Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Just install Paint.NET... they'll never know the difference 1
Asgard Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 (edited) I had a quote on the table for the EEA based on our FTE which was about 9K a year, and asked them to re-issue based on an Academy Trust license..... For 11k a year then they told me "sorry no more EEA" Now I have got a revised quote for the new per-device license and its £22k a year.... that's to license every device..... In one institution only. There essentially saying if you have CS6 or an existing EEA agreement you can renew/upgrade and stay in the happy realm of FTE Everyone else..... Pray for a lottery win or a reversal in education funding cuts. I outlined my points to Adobe today; Our MS Campus Agreement is less for far more AutoDesk and even Microsoft realise if you empower the students when they go out into industry they will want it and try will get money that way or progress to Uni. Are we meant to go back to the dark ages by limiting people to rooms/areas - and in open areas we we only kit out 50 of our 120 LRC machines and in the event someone wants to use CC do we need to kick a student off a PC. Our library over lunch is full. They genuinely were not bothered - pay it or don't there not bothered and I quote Adobe "use an inferior product" They actually told me " well you could make part of your library a CC area and promote it that way...." No I kid you not they genuinely said that !! Edited February 12, 2016 by Asgard

Was asked install GIMP by one of our more IT literate teachers (we are a primary). Msi installed beautifully with no fuss. Kids happy using it. All good. Photo shop GOODBYE...
free780 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Probably more secure and the help will work with a proxy. 1
robjduk Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 We are going for Photoshop and Lightroom elements this year as our CC4 is getting very old. Fed up with students asking why their new camera's RAW files dont work
fiza Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I know this thread is nearly a year old now but we are in the same position now. Been using CS5.5 for years and now teachers are asking when we are upgrading to the latest versions. How can Schools afford to pay the subscription prices Adobe are asking for? How do you licence your School for Adobe CC? Licence some devices and thereby limit where students can use the software? @pslater - did you make the jump to the latest versions?
robjduk Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I seem to remember our 100 seat creative cloud was about £1700 a year. Not great but it is nice to be able to advertise we have the latest software.
3s-gtech Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 We were lucky with CS5.5 - we bought it not long before CS6 came out and with our first year's support we got CS6 for free. We then topped up our licenses a few years ago and it was still good value. The costs with CC seem to be astronomical - CS6 works lovely on Windows 10 so I have no intention of sending any money their way with this sort of rip-off.
fiza Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 If you have a mixed environment with CC and CS5.5, or other iteration, are there any issues with working on something on CC and then moving to a machine with CS5.5? Any compatibility issues?
flyinghaggis Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) We ended up just buying licences for a couple of technology labs plus our art department as the CC costs were deemed too high for a site wide rollout like the previous version of creative suite. Adobe need to realise that this is going to push us away from using their software for training pupils and will only result in us looking for cheaper or open source alternatives. Most schools we've been in touch with are now looking to move away from Adobe software due to the increased costs and the more restrictive licensing model of Creative Cloud. clockend25 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 We actually bought some CC licenses recently to upgrade the software our Media Studies department were using. Made a difference that the minimum purchase went from 100 licenses to 25, which made it viable for us.
dhicks Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 How do you licence your School for Adobe CC? Things have changed somewhat since this thread was started - Adobe have new pricing. From our software licensing supplier (softbox.co.uk): "Adobe recently released their K-12 licensing model for Primary and Secondary Schools. Essentially, you can avail a full Creative Cloud for teams licence [includes most of the Adobe creative applications] for £18.64 per Device (minimum purchase = 25)." We bought the minimum 25 licenses, so £466 (or £559.20 with VAT included) per year - that covers our IT suite and some teacher machines. This actually turned out cheaper than the three standard full Creative Cloud licenses we'd been paying for before.

We have 452 desktops and 103 laptops so to licence those at £18.64 per device is over £10k per annum. Even if we just cover out CDT/Art & media departments we are looking at 146 machines at £2.7k per annum.
