datar_ Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Just wondering what your thoughts are thus far. As we all cannot talk about the Multiplayer Alpha, for which we all accepted the NDR when we played it; And we shouldn't talk about it because we all want to Beta. However the Press have been playing it! Conan O'Brien had a copy of the game for his Super Bowl Clueless Gamer special. And There are some videos on the inter webs showing how the Shotgun isn't a one shot kill like the original Doom and the Palsma Rifel doesn't fry your enemies in a few quick pulses. (Spelling for Palsma spelled incorrect on purpose - ) So Without talking Alpha Thoughts?
BassTech Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 It looks ace! Big fan of doom, I hope this new one is more like the old ones rather than doom 3, it was a good game but felt a bit tame for doom. I want it to be a ridiculously OTT gore-fest with a quality sound track and I hope they make it more challenging (again, like the old ones). Can't wait!

I think that is what is bad about Doom 3, because it wasn't pure violence, it was a horror story And the Multiplayer on the Engine was lame in comparison to Quake III's older engine. I do remember Quake 4 suffering the same problems as Doom 3, since patched now but... It was a massive blow I think. DOOM (4)'s multiplayer does work fluidly... (Is saying it works breaking NDA, meh) The videos online show much gore! I'd probably say even more so than Killing Floor 2. As far as being challenging goes. I sincerely hope they went down the same route Wolfenstein: The New Order did, bringing back our beloved 100 Health and 100 Armour system! But the fighting shows with a shotgun, it can take a few shots to take down what I think is an Imp. Which is a shame as that will reduce the shoot'em up factor Doom 1/2 had. Hopefully the Beta will be out soon!
datar_ Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 I sincerely hope DOOM(4) has taken gore-y cues from Brutal Doom mod - Mod DB

Missed out on the Alpha but good to know it works hopefully I can get in on the beta if it's on PS4. I'm guessing they may increase the power of the shotgun if they get enough requests from the community, here's hoping anyway! Also, a new quake would be incredible! loved those games as well, so many memories.
Norphy Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I think that is what is bad about Doom 3, because it wasn't pure violence, it was a horror story And the Multiplayer on the Engine was lame in comparison to Quake III's older engine. The thing that annoyed me about Doom 3 the most was its predictable repetitiveness. Oh look, there's a weapon/healthpack/ammo/armour/whatever in the middle of a room with lighting around it. Let's pick it up. Oh look, all of the lights have gone out and I'm being attacked by everything. Rinse and repeat. Historically, ID have always made brilliant engines but with the possible exception of Quake 2, they've made mediocre to OKish single player games. It's always been down to the third party developers to take their engines and make something decent out of them, Raven especially.
synaesthesia Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I sincerely hope DOOM(4) has taken gore-y cues from Brutal Doom mod - Mod DB I recall someone from id saying exactly that - not sure if it was an article or from one of the developers personally. Can't wait for the full thing. I did enjoy Doom3 but as has been said it didn't feel quite right. And Q4 for multiplayer was just meh; there's a reason that Quake 3 and Quake Live are far more popular.
datar_ Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 Raven especially. I've just had the best flash back to Star Trek Elite Force
Norphy Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Preferred the Jedi Outcast series personally but Elite Force was good too
datar_ Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 I recall someone from id saying exactly that - not sure if it was an article or from one of the developers personally. John Romero did comment on Brutal Doom, He didn't work at iD when DOOM 3 was in it's infancy, (sacked on the grounds of creative differences iirc [probably had something to do with Daikatana]).
synaesthesia Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Wasn't Romero. Might have been Tim Willits, was chatting to him about D4 last year.
datar_ Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 That is a good question. A little bit of light reading when I get home tonight (shakes fist at LEA provided internet)

BassTech Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Just found out about DOOM snapmap, a built-in level editor: DOOM® | SnapMap and User-Generated Content. This game is going to take a lot of time away from me! Takes me back to the old Timesplitters games where I'd spend wayy too long making & tweaking levels. DOOMs shaping up to be a great game
DMcGuigan Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Official DOOM twitter claims there's no NDA on the closed beta that happened over the weekend, so we can talk about that. I put about 5/6 hours in, across both game modes.. all I can say is this was the fastest pre-order I've ever put in. Shotgun good.. Shotgun very good. :D
flyinghaggis Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 (edited) Downloading the free open beta for this at the moment on Steam. Anyone else on it just now? Update: Feels more like Quake than Doom to me. I know it's a remake/update/re-imagining of doom but it really feels like they could have done a lot more with the franchise. It's literally like playing a game from 1995! The physics of the game, jumping especially, seem 'off' as well IMO. This feels way behind the pack when compared to more modern shooters like Counterstrike:GO, Destiny, Battlefield and Halo. Maybe the single player will be more entertaining but I'm not impressed with the multiplayer after a quick 30 minute blast. Edited April 15, 2016 by flyinghaggis

Have to agree, was really disappointed I managed an hour before I couldn't take any more, more telling is that of the 7 friends on my steam that also tried it I had played the most! Picked up the battleborn beta after though and enjoyed that a lot!
GuyJD Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Id have found themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place, on one hand they want to make a great game but on the other hand they want to stay true to the original game that without a doubt holds a place in all out hearts. From what I heard the closed beta played too much like a COD/Halo game and people had a go at them for that and now with the open beta they've changed the feel of the game and people have said that it feels dated and can't compete with modern FPS games. They've got to find that balance between old and new that very few remakes ever manage to nail.
BassTech Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Yeah, I was left underwhelmed by the beta, I was going to pre-order but not going to now, will wait for the reviews. As long as the single player is solid, I'll still buy it though.
Haptic Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 I played the MP beta this weekend, not happy at all really. The footage on Conan O Brien looked awesome, hopefully the finished product resembles that closely. I agree with Doom3 too, I'm a huge fan of dead space 1/2 but doom should steer clear of the survival horror element (although the jump scares were well placed) i'm set to pre-order, if not for the campaign alone, the gameplay vids thus far look superb and the pace/jib/gore all look spot on. One thing though, I came up against a revenant on the mulitplayer....it was HUGE. I swear they used to be roughly player sized?!?, otherwise when they swung their mean right hook it would have gone way over the head! Joe
synaesthesia Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Ditto, I have it preordered with DLC MP was OK, it was a bit Quake 4 but I wouldn't have expected anything less. You can't really make Doom feel any different in MP. SP is where it will be at, and hoping it plays well!
RyReZar Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Played the beta and didn't even last a match before I deleted it, haven't played the original but for a modern day shooter, its poor... Was looking forward to playing SP rather than MP but if MP is anything to go by then I wont be getting it, also dissapointed to see that its jumped on the "season pass" bandwagon.
datar_ Posted April 28, 2016 Author Posted April 28, 2016 The Closed Alpha and Closed Beta had a better feel to both of them than the Open Beta did. They are trying to make it too like #CallofDoody and less Doom/Quake feel
