flarn2006 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 First off, if this request violates the rules (related to "warez" or something, probably) I apologize; since the specific version I'm looking for is no longer sold, I'm pretty confident it would fall into the grey area of "abandonware". Basically, I used to go to a school that used this software called SuccessMaker. It was a really old version, even then. To give you an idea of what version I'm looking for, the icon said "CCC" (stood for Computer Curriculum Corporation) and when you opened it up, it asked you to log in, and had some space picture. If I remember correctly it was the surface of the Moon. Since I stopped going to that school (actually even while I was going there) I've always wanted a copy of that program to play around with at home just for fun. Lately I've wanted it even more for nostalgia. But no matter how hard I look, I haven't been able to find a copy of it anywhere. I emailed Pearson, the company that owns CCC now (they own way too much), but they were no help. Does anyone have access to a copy of the software? Maybe you work at a school that still uses it, or you have the disc buried in a closet somewhere? If so, please send me a PM or an email ([email protected]). I know it'll probably ask for an activation key or something; if you aren't able to provide me with one, I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to make it work without one, so that's fine. Again, due to the old version of the software I'm pretty sure it's considered abandonware by now, I also have no plans to use it in a commercial or educational (not even homeschooling) environment. I just want to play around with it for nostalgia. If anyone can actually find this and send it to me, you'll be giving me something I haven't been able to find for more than a decade, and it would be VERY appreciated. Thanks!
twin--turbo Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 1st hit on google points to Pearson school. And the rest of the google page. In the UK it was looked after by RM. IMOH it was rubbish 12 years when I had to install/manage it. Its still in use and so not abandond even if your looking for a really old version.

Okay, but I don't see how that helps me actually get a copy. It's not like they just have a download available on their site, especially for a very old version. (Of course, if you found one, that's different, and I'd appreciate the link!) Not to mention, from what I can tell, while the name and purpose are the same, the newer versions are pretty much an entirely different program. Edited February 11, 2016 by flarn2006

It was not a simple program, it was a client application with a database backend (ADABAS based IIRC) . required setup by an agent etc.. TT

TT The version I'm talking about was on a bunch of computers in the classroom with no network connection. And why wouldn't I be able to set up a database backend?

We used Successmaker until a couple of years ago. It can still be used but isn't supported any longer either by RM or Pearson (who have another product now). We used it for at least 10 years and it was a client-server setup that could be a real pain to administer and took some setting up, so I'm not sure about your stand-alone version. Maybe it was just a US thing?
rich_tech Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I want to say here, that its likely not to be on one DVD after a point if you can get it, it became a big application to get installed and manage with a sybase database behind it all from what I was exposed to, the majority of us who went through the horror of RM had a few DVDs of software for it here and its various updates. If you do get hold of it, chances are it will struggle to run on anything after windows 7 if its below version 1.7.3 as ours had to be upgraded to that to work with 7 onwards. I wouldnt fancy buying it either, its super expensive as a program from my understanding of it when we looked at the new version a year or so back.

We originally paid a hefty packet for the site licence from RM but now it's gone to a subscription model so we will not be paying £850 per year. A lot better in my opinion. I am currently sat in the training session. It is at version 8 at the moment which is okay but the Maths side doesn't work on iPads due to the need to Flash. Version 9 is currently being trialled in America (where it is developed) and this will be 'flashless' - according to our trainer today. Looking forward to shutting the old server down and removing the application from our build (as it's all web based now). Gareth
ITBadger Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 Just checked our archives and I have the installation media for version 1.7.2 but I think that this is far too modern for what you are searching for. The date on the files is 2013, but that could have been refreshed when i moved the files onto a new server. Let me know if it's any use to you.

I filled in a form on the Pearson website requesting information when the new version was released. That was several months ago and I have not heard anything. I was assuming therefore that it had not been released. Typical Pearson reliability and inefficiency. I will contact them.

It didn't go exactly to plan as the company (based in the US) had not setup our URL so we couldn't work with our installation. Training was good and the system is a lot better than 1.7.3 Version 9 promises to be even better as they move everything over to HTML 5 so more less dependancy on Flash. Incredible Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 Its great to know that the newer versions are web based, probably cloud based. Any idea of pricing, are they offering Site licenses or Seat by Seat. Thanks.

We bought it just before Pearson pulled out of the UK market. We were (and took) a full refund. Gareth

I’ve been looking for old SuccessMaker media for some amount of time now. Out of curiosity, what do all of your SuccessMaker disks look like? Edited May 11 by LiamLG
