CNAME noob

Evening,

Found this... http://help.bing.microsoft.com/#apex/18/en-gb/10003/0), and want to install the CNAME to strict.bing.com however after going through my DNS, I just cant find what I think should be there. In forward lookup zones I have my school's records, domain records and one called msdcs but nothing to put external sites in however I have never really played with these other than the odd tweak of something which was there before.

 

Could someone tell me roughly where I should be putting this please? Would I make a new site? Where are all the other DNS records for external sites as I can not see them here.

Create a new forward zone for the website and add the cname within it

Use a Domain Alias (DNAME) under "other new records" instead.

Should do, it's the same way you redirect things like Autodiscover for O365 (Autodiscover.myschool.wilts.sch.uk -> autodiscover.outlook.com etc)

Just tried it (new forward zone called Bing > new CNAME of strict.bing.com), gives a "An alias (CNAME) record cannot be added to this DNS name. The DNS name contains records that are incompatible with the CNAME record" error.

 

A CNAME that points a DNS name to another DNS name within AD lookup zones works fine (say pointing server.ad.school.net to bongo.com), but when pointing an external site at another external site I've always used DNAMEs.

 

So your autodiscover example above works fine, but if you try (say) pointing banana.com to autodiscover.outlook.com in a new "banana.com" zone, it should fail with an error until you use a DNAME.

I am trying to implement the CNAME option for Bing strict safe search by creating a zone for Bing and adding a CNAME for strict.bing.com. I get the same error as Pete - "an alias (CNAME) record cannot be added to this DNS name. The DNS name contains records that are incompatible with the CNAME record."

 

I tried creating strict.bing.com as a DNAME under Bing forward lookup zone as suggested, but that just breaks access to the site at all. What am I missing?

I failed at it to be honest but you reminded me to give it another go. I sorted youtube a while back so should be in a better position. Will report back.

Given how bad the default settings are for bing i'd say yes.

 

But as strict.bing doesn't seem to work anymore we've just blocked bing.

 

We've had outright porn popping up in default bing searches for words as innocent as mature

I thought that their initial plan for pron results being delivered from explicit.bing.com allowing simple filtering was a great idea ... I'm guessing that didn't work out.
