Right. Just installed WSUS on our server and have got it too download the updates we need. After that i am stuck! I have no idea how to set the clients to connect to connect to it. The IIS only shows and under construction page and i can't get the console to show anything.

What needs to be done???

HELP

You tell the clients to look to the server (instead of the web) for their updates via Group Policy. I've set up a separate GPO for it. Haven't plugged it in (enabled it) yet 'cos i haven't had a chance to test it before i roll it out. Someone who's done it will be able to help more i'm sure :)

I created a GPO for WSUS and applied it to the Machines changing the following settings:

Comp Config > Windows Components > Windows Update

The 2 key ones are

"Specify intranet Microsoft update service location" and "Enable Client-side targetting"

The 1st should piont to the web server u configured with WSUS (usually the same server), (eg WSUS_Server) so both boxes should read:

http://your_wsus_server - if they run on any other port then you need to ad that in too (http://your_wsus_server:xxxx)

The second is hopw you group different PC's together (I use different GPOs for Pupil Desktops, Staff Desktops and Servers, so i have 3 GPO's each pointing to a different group (eg "Pupil PC's")

The other policies you can configure to sut your needs..

I've also just installed wsus, done all the sychronising etc ready to set gpo at my next visit to that school, but when I try to access the admin page via IE I get the page under construction, so am slightly concerned that when i point the computers there to update they won't be able to access the wsus updates. Everything else looks alright just wondering about the IIS page.

What version of WSUS u using?

Is WSUS setup to use a port other than 80?f so, try adding the port number into IE

Think you may need the port number in GPO too...

I'm using the latest version, I've set the proxy with port 80 and wsus is downloading updates ok, so I'm assuming it uses port 80. I typed in the port number along with the address trying to access the admin console from a remote computer, all I got was page under construction.

I'll be setting up one computer to test updating at the end of the week when I'm in next.

I've just read a thread in another forum that says that in wsus 3 you can't access the admin page via the IIS you have to use the Microsoft Management Console Snap-in for WSUS3!

The Port 80 is only used for sending out the updates to the clients, unless you specified that WSUS it to use SSL. The Administration web site runs on a different port, 8535 if memory serves correctly. You can also install a local MMC console on a client for managing the WSUS too.

There's no web management page in WSUS3. You must use the MMC to manage the server(s). Besides, even on WSUS2 and eariler, the management web interface only got put on 8535 by default if there was an existing site setup on port 80.
