RDS 2012 User profile issues.

Help! Have created a RDS server on 2012 R2. Was working fine up until about a month ago. Now we have random instances of teachers logging in and getting

The user Profile service failed the sign in.

User profile cannot be loaded.

Event viewer gives errors 1500, 1502, 1508, 1511, 1515 and 1542, though not for each logon failure.

I've turned off enabling user profile disks, deleted all the virtual disks, both on the RD server and the DC. Deleted all user entris in c:\users, and deleted user profiles in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/Currver/Profile Lists.

And I'm down to my last clump of hair. What am I missing? Is it worth rebuilding the whole thing?

use delprof to nuke the profiles, see if that helps.

Just ran Delprof2 on it, and it deleted a profile called uvhdcleanupbin which was mahoosive. Am hoping (beyond hope?) that this may have been the problem. Will monitor!

when you mention you cleared out c:\users does that include the default user which is a hidden folder that resides there.

 

we had a similar issue which showed similar symptoms to this after a technician deleted the contents c:\users folder.

 

after restoring the folder from a backup it worked again. it may be more difficult if you have deleted all the linking registry keys also as no one thinks to backup the registry before modifying it.

 

Maybe a vhd server restore is required and may be the quickest solution.

Yeah, I've got a creeping feeling that it's a corrupt default profile. All the googling I've done keeps mentioning that. Being the faux Sysadmin that I am, I have no backups of a VHD. If this works, that's the first thing on the list, methinks.

 

Can I use a default profile from another server to copy onto the RDS one after deleting default?

that didnt work when we tried it but give it a go you may be lucky.

 

just check in the profilelist reg key that your default user is pointing to %systemdrive%\users\default as this key would also be required. if you have removed that also then a server rebuild is probably your best option. it will definately be quicker than trying to reconstruct the default profile (which i am not even sure is possible tbh) even if it is you may suffer from other issues further down the line.

 

This advice wont help you now, but as long winded as it is housekeeping old users off RDS is better through the advanced system settings and deleting profiles there. although delprof works and is a great tool for windows clients, i have never trusted it on my RDS as i read (may have been on here) someone rds server had issues after running delprof on the server.

something you should never do is delete the users from c:\user unless you have removed the profile first using the advanced system settings first and errors saying the folder is not empty. This happens only because there is an locked file inside preventing the removal of the root user folder
