FOG on VM

Hi All

 

I am sure this has been asked before, but I am planning my next server upgrade and going Virtual with Hyper-V. I was going to put Fog into another physical server, but I do not see any reasons to not have it as a virtual server.

 

Has anyone installed it as a virtual server?

How much HDD space did you allocate?

How much memory did you allocate?

How many processors did you allocate?

How did you setup the storage?

Did you setup a separate raid array?

Did you partition the main array?

Did you just install it and the images into a VHDx?

 

I am planning to have 25 x 1.2Tb SAS Drives running in a RAID 10 setup on the host.

I've run fog sucessfully on an old p4 desktop - I suspect anything you give it on a modern virtual host will be fine. I know ubuntu 14.04 server is pretty happy as a VM; can't comment on other distros. Edited January 22, 2016 by mats

It was set up by someone cleverer than me - essentially to give an "imaging in a box" solution, but I had it running as a VM. Ubuntu in virtual box on a core duo laptop with 1 GB ram allocated with the VHD on a USB 2 HDD

 

So yeah, I reckon it'll work!

I have two, they're not VMs but I have used it for 9 years now so I know it well.

 

Originally it was on an old P3 server with 1GB of RAM and 66GB of storage. Actually worked alright. I then bought an HP ML115 with a quad core Opteron and 1GB of RAM, 500GB of storage running Debian 5 x64. Still using that, but put 4GB of RAM in it now. Also got an old HP DL 160 G3 as another FOG host with 8GB of RAM and 500GB of storage, works lovely.

 

These old machines show that it's not hard on hardware, but needs quick NICs and a nice clean install.

Similar story. My wife runs it in the lab she lectures in to reimage machines. Runs from a Virtualbox image stored on a USB HDD connected to her desktop PC.

 

I wouldn't go overboard in allocating resources to begin with. E.g. If it needs a smidge more RAM as a VM then it's only a couple of clicks to sort that.
