Windows 7 - Default Browser

Hi All,

 

I am looking for some advice, at present I have two browsers (IE 11 and Chrome) deployed for both staff and students to use.

Recently, I have been asked by one member of staff to change the default browser from IE 11 to Chrome.

 

What browser does everyone else as their 'default'?

I had the same request from a member of staff passing me in the corridor last week. I told him that as he was the only one making this request [which is the case] I wouldn't be making any changes. If more staff make the same request I will look at it again.

 

Default browser currently: Internet Explorer

 

Alternate browser installed: Chrome.

We use IE11 as the default as it works best with our VLE which is currently sharepoint based. Personally I think as long as your default browser supports everything used in your environment then that is all that matters as the user can use any of the provided browsers anyway.

Thanks for the swift response, the ticket from the user was:

 

'If I follow links in emails it defaults to opening in internet explorer. Trouble is, the websites don’t have as much functionality as they do in google chrome. Is there any way that it can default to opening in google chrome?'

 

I am just hesistant at changing the settings for one user, I am more tempted to go on the opinion of @DaveP

Google Chrome is the default browser here for both students and staff. Internet Explorer is available should anyone want to use it, but the majority use Chrome.

 

I can understand how your member of staff feels. I wouldn't be able to stand having IE11 as the default either.

 

By the way, if you make Chrome the default you can force it to open certain websites in IE by installing the Legacy Browser Support add-on and configuring it through Group Policy.

IE11 is our default campus wide but the latest version of Firefox is standard on all PCs.

It's a choice here.

 

Staff machines have chrome and IE11 on the domain logins and also firefox on the non domain login.

 

Student machines have IE and chrome controlled by GPO.

 

It's their choice to use whatever they like.

We removed Chrome when Impero was having problems with it, and have yet to replace it. GoogleApps posed some early issues with IE which appear to have been resolved. Seldom get asked about browsers these days unless something happens not to work properly with IE that we can prove does in Chrome. Firefox was removed from the system many years ago.

IE11 is my default on Windows 10, with Edge disabled using App Locker and Google Chrome installed. I avoid Firefox, simply because there are no GPO templates to control it via Group Policy, whereas there are for Chrome.

 

An alternative which I use all the time - lets say for a common/popular website is to create specific IE or Chrome shortcuts on a Redirected Desktop for example -

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.edugeek.net

While you can do that with GPO, IE11 and YouTube works fine here.

Have you had a look at your detection of internet/intranet settings and compatibility mode?

 

If I artificially add youtube.com to compatibility mode view I get the flash warning. If I remove it and ensure it's running in standards mode it HTML5's just fine!

We had the issue with YouTube in IE 11 for some time. The message just said we need to install flash. Flash was installed so we assumed it was another issue with IE. Turned out that it was because our version of flash was out of date! Updated to latest version and YouTube works fine in IE. it's a pity the message didn't actually say that in the first place! Apparently it's to do with Microsoft not supporting IE11 to try to force people to upgrade Windows. All it's doing here is forcing us to use Chrome.

Seems unlikely. I'm watching it just fine on IE11.

 

Check your IE options, advanced and then the multimedia section. I had an issue just like you're describing which turned out to be a setting - ticking 'enable alternatice codecs in HTML 5 media elements', 'play animations in web pages' and 'play sounds in webpages' (or it's GPO equivalent) and then a restart of the computer and Youtube was happy and working again.
