Office 365 - Moving Web Hosting Supplier - DNS Changes/Order?

We have been using Office 365 for many years; and have both our School's original Domain Name, and newer Domain Name registered (& set-up etc.).

 

We are at the early stages of changing our Web(site) Hosting Company; and in-turn, transferring (the registration of) our 2 Domains across as well (So that our Web Hosting and Domain registrations are under one).

 

I just wanted some advice, recommendations and/or best procedures on the correct method of transferring across?

 

I can set-up the (new) Office 365 DNS settings within the CPanel of the new Hosting Company fine etc... it's the correct sequence of events, that will allow me to do this without affecting, or at the least with minimal outage, of our Office 365 service whilst the (new) DNS settings are propagated?

 

Assuming that the important DNS record(s) are the MX ones... as I am not sure which of the other ones are purely used to prove ownership of the domain(s) to Microsoft when you initially register them with the Office 365 service?

 

Hopefully I've made sense, and thanks for any advice given.

Hi,

 

If you login to Office 365 Admin Center, Select 'Domains' from the left navigation pane and then select the domain in question. You should have an option in the right hand action pane appear called 'domain settings' if you select that option it will take you to a page that show's you the required DNS Records based on the Domain Purpose you have specified. The DNS Records that are listed per service; you just need to ensure that the specified records are configured in your new DNS Management Portal.

 

All DNS Records are important per the respective service;

 

The DNS Verification Record that was used to verify the domain initially does not need to be moved over, it's only used during the verification process.

Was what I thought the process would be; thanks for the confirmation.

 

I gather it's just down to how long the new DNS settings take to propagate which would determine possible downtime of emailing services

If you change the name servers; and don't remove the configuration from the old DNS Management Service then I can't see you getting any issues in terms of downtime. If they go to old place the records will be there, new place will have them if you have configured them in advance. (logically in my head that would see you ok - DNS Propagation is pretty quick these days though, i make changes to public DNS every day and it never seems to slow me down)
