Hi all,

I need to do a reset on an APC Smart-UPS 2200VA 2U.

Networking is borked and I need to reset and reconfigure the UPS via telnet or such. Powerchute isn't letting me do it.

I haven't got the original serial cable (god knows where it is).

The rear of the UPS has an RJ50 USB socket and a serial port.

Will either cable let me telnet in or do I need the serial like what came with it?

I'd rather the USB but will it work ? P/N: AP9827

Cheers in advance :)

A friend of mine knows too well, as do I through experience. If you plug in the wrong serial cable in APC UPSes they have a tendency to turn off (its an interesting feature that causes no end of problems if you don't know about it). Your need to make sure you get the correct serial cable for your UPS, not any old cable. Apparently they are wired differently or something. So be careful

No idea about using the RJ50 USB I'm afraid.

I know about the cable well enough... £35 !!!!

Just need to know if the USB one will do it

£35! I gave mine to my friend for free! Want me to check if I have anymore? What cable do you need, I think they have A, B or C on them or similar

Yes please. Big cheers :) Is it an APC branded one and 9 pin. There are some with less pins.

I've chucked hundreds of these over the years, if I knew they were worth so much I would of kept hold of them!

Are you sure you can get onto the management via serial/usb. Usualy its just for signaling.

Is the network modular?

If you mean the network is a separate module then yes

Purely for signaling I thought. You install software on the server which sends the command.

If you have a network module you can control things more but that's on the bigger rack mount 3 phase stuff.

Press the reset button on the AP9631 card, it will default to a static ip. 192.168.x.x cant remember off hand exactly what it is.

TT

I've done that m8, cant get a peep out of it. Its the UPS itself that needs resetting, not the NIC card. It's locked me out of the NIC

Thinking about it - with a lot of switches I telnet using a Serial cable, then convert this from Serial to USB and it works great. You can pick them up cheap on auction sites.

I've done this (usb on older models is broken, it goes away). Switched to serial and had the wrong cable. It doesn't even beep, it just turns off immediately when the cable is plugged in.

The NIC is the management card, it recives data from the UPS. The UPS itself only has rudimentary Awareness..

It may be a press and hold for the Management reset, but I do recall it starts up on a fixed IP so you will need a laptop on that subnet to pre-configure befor joining the network.

its probably actualy a AP9617 type card given the age.

I might be able to get you a cable on Monday, as we have loads of the network cards for deployment and they come with one in the box I think. I will have a look.

APC have their own proprietary cables though. Not standard serials.

E.g. the Comms socket in the pic isn't RJ45, its RJ50 - with 10 pins instead of 8. The serial is non standard too.

You're right, but the other end is Serial as normally it plugs into the back of a server for example.

I offered you an APC serial cable Milky, you just needed to check if it was useable for you. 940-0024c

Sorry m8. Been hectic here. That looks like the right one.

I'll send you a PM right away. Big cheers
