DavR Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I've had this situation before and the engineer arrived with just the hinges and not a back cover. Also as far as I know the 5530 covers are still available but not the 5520s. What warranty do you have on the laptop? RTB or NBD? Yeah, that happened to me for this device. They guy came week before last with just the hinges but no cover. Dell assure me they've found a back cover now though, we shall see when the guy turns up tomorrow. We're on NBD.
mullet_man Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 Keep us updated as like I say I've got lots of these laptops with potential hinge issues, and I'd very much doubt Dell will replace them all considering the amount of new ones I've already had.
DavR Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Well, the engineer came a day later than expected, but I've just had hinges and back cover replaced on the E5520. Still no news on parts (or the promised swap out) for the E5530 though.
mullet_man Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 That's interesting. Pretty sure I'll be logging an 5520 with a dodgy hinge soon enough so I'll report back here.
PrimaryNetMan Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Well can't complain, first of the replacement machines is on the way... DavR Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Wow, pretty decent swap out! Although, I'm hoping they'll just send me an E5550 like they did before. I really can't be bothered with creating another build, and our laptop trolleys are becoming a right mixed bag! That's if System Replacement dept ever respond. Had the swap out agreed over a week ago and heard nothing more since. @PrimaryNetMan, how long did yours take?

Been 7 days since the original call was logged, just waiting now for delivery, they state 10-15 working days once it has been ordered.
DavR Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Wow, doing better than me. Over two weeks since I logged mine
mullet_man Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 I need to log 3 laptops with failed hinges, wonder what I'll get. I'll keep you posted. Will try log them later this week.
mullet_man Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I still haven't logged my 3 5520 laptops but this has now increased to 5 with broken hinges. I have logged a 5530 which I have had a call of the engineers to say that they are waiting on parts.
mukz Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Good luck mullet! It took me nearly 2 months for them to come out, by that point i brought one off eBay and changed it over. And told dell to send me the screen, hinge and case to which they obliged after the Business Manager who knows someone in the Dell UK support team threatened to no longer order any dell gear. Thought it wouldn't work but it did.
jmak Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I've got a 5530 with a broken hinge. I think given the condition of the machine a warranty swap would be optimistic so I'm looking at spare parts. Is it worth buying a cheap pattern part for about £3 or one that's supposedly a Dell original stripped out of a new machine (about £13)?
mukz Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I would buy the dell one, if it don't work or is rubbish refund it

Thought it wouldn't work but it did. Am not holding my breath this time, they have swapped a lot of laptops and it was something they would never continue to do due to the amount I have with issues. I can't see how they've totally ran out of back covers / hinges I bet their is a warehouse somewhere in the world with thousands in haha.

More often than not, when the hinge goes, it also rips out part of the plastic insert in the lid assembly. If it were just the hinge, I would have happily just bought a bucket of those, it's the back lids that are the problem.
DavR Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 I'm still waiting on my promised swap out for a E5530.... logged with System Exchange Dept over three weeks ago now, no reply to chasing emails, not even a status update. If it's not resolved in the next few days I'll have to get my account manager involved

DavR Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Well, after a few angry phone calls I eventually talked to System Exchange last week, who when we got the ball rolling, had a replacement out within 48hrs! Just received a Latitude E5570 in replacement for my E5530, similar spec. I wonder if they'll chase after getting the faulty one back? They didn't last time, parts were about £60 on ebay when I last looked *innocent whistle* Proving a bitch to build with SCCM though, just like the E5550 we got last time. So many odd additional drivers, and graphics driver misbehaving.... but that's a whole other thread!
mullet_man Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 I've just had a hinge and back cover replaced on a E5530. Dave you need to download the driver pack from Dell and import them into SCCM. I import them into MDT for deployment here and never had any issues. http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/2065.dell-command-deploy-driver-packs-for-enterprise-client-os-deployment Let's see how I go on with logging 7 E5520s with hinge issues going to log them next week.

Dell Command | Deploy - Driver Packs for Enterprise Client OS Deployment - Enterprise Client - Wiki - Client and Mobile Solutions - Dell Community Let's see how I go on with logging 7 E5520s with hinge issues going to log them next week. Oh really? I suppose they must have restocked by now. Much as it's nice to have new for old, tbh I would have been just as happy with repair, it's much less admin. I'm not a fan of the driver packs tbh, I'd rather not fill my SCCM database with unnecessary drivers, or nasty drivers like the Dell Touchpad controller, it's sluggish enough as it is. So yeah, I bring it on myself I suppose! Best of luck with the E5520s... They will probably argue the toss about them as unlike the E5530s it's not a recognised fault on these. Have some pics of the damage from the cleanest one possible, so they can't claim user accidental damage!
PrimaryNetMan Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Well after some delivery delays I now have 3 replacement E5570s. They haven't even mentioned anything regarding the collection of the old ones...
mullet_man Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Well after some delivery delays I now have 3 replacement E5570s. They haven't even mentioned anything regarding the collection of the old ones... You normally get an email from someone in the Outreach team who will organise collection of the old ones, every time it's been a good few weeks after I've received the new ones. I always package the old ones in the boxes the new ones came in. I've had a to log a few recently as our laptop audit has discovered some broken hinges, so lets see how I get on too.
DavR Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 Hello all! Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I've just encountered another broken hinge on an E5530. In this instance, the laptop has been kicked about a bit (discovered the hinge replacing a broken LCD screen) and the lid is actually ok, so I'm just replacing the hinges myself rather than going through the warranty charade. Thought you guys might like to know original E5530 hinges are now on Amazon for £11.95 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01IPB8H5A/. Don't buy them all though! Latitude E5520 hinges are on there too for less than a tenner, although dunno if they're originals or generic - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00XJDIBM4.
mullet_man Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 Thanks for this Dave, I've got another few under my desk which I need to log with Dell and see if they will fix or replace them.
