Add the ip address to the hosts file. In winddows xp/vista/2003 the default location for the hosts file is %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\

What exactly are you trying to do? Add a second ip address to the machine? If so thats in advanced section of tcp/ip. You need a static address though if it's dhcp it will need changing first

basically its for the councils intranet we dont want to punlish the IP address or make it avaible on all machines.

I'm a little unclear on what your trying to do some generic advice (sorry if some of it is below you).

 

127.0.0.1 will resolve to localhost automatically (used for testing stuff on the same machine, etc).

 

Presumably your getting a network ip address find out what it is by start > run > cmd >ipconfig. Provided firewall settings, etc are ok typing this into another machine will access it.

 

Anything more fancy than this you need to edit the host file with a fake DNS record (see above) or put an actual DNS record into your server....

Is what you're actually asking how to do "How do I add a valid second IP to the NIC?" - ie your intranet is on another IP range and you want to allow only some machines to access it by giving them a second valid IP for the intranet range?

 

Or are you trying to do the reverse and blackhole the intranet by redirecting the server IP to localhost?

 

Or neither...

Ok we have an IP address for an intranet for an external organisation. I would like to restrict who can have access to this. I want only a few people have the power to use it. So i don't want to put the IP in the DNS because then everyone can get into it.

 

I want it so i can type in a DNS name in the web browser on a select few computers.

Just for an IP address that is the schools intranet

create a webpage with a link to the intranet on it, create a website contraining that page, set the website properties so it can only be accessed by the people you want it too, then make an a record pointing to the website.

 

and hope no ones using an external dns server!.

Presuming you are on XP etc....on the machines that you want to be able to resolve a name for the IP, edit

 

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

 

Add a line saying the IP of your host and then tab and the name you want to be resolved to the IP.

 

There is are a couple of examples given within the hosts file. It's fairly straight forward.

Could just create a shortcut to the site via ip but name the shortcut something they would get and put it on their desktop.

A gpo way would be to make a favorite for it in IE using its IP and direct link, but name the Favorite something easy for them to understand and only publish that favorite to the machines or users you want.

Or use the lmshosts file they have been mentioning.
