Ripped DVD files in user areas

Hi guys.

 

I've done a recent clean up of students user areas as I found DVD copies of films which they had uploaded themselves, 1, obviously the files shouldn't be there and 2, they were taking up loads of space. Is this something you monitor or is there a way to limit the size of file that they can upload? Some of them were 1.9GB a file!

file server resource manager can block extensions (i believe file size blocks) and can report on what it finds its built into server 08+ just needs turning on and a bit of fairly obvious config

The best way would surely be put a quota on their user areas?

I'll have a look into file server resource manager, a lot of these students are "photography" students so have been given quite generous user areas.

We use resource manager and we have quotas enabled, but when things are quiet we do wander through the user areas and check the file server reports anyway, just to check what is there. It usually turns up something - like you, movies are the most common, but also stuff like offensive names on files, various other rubbish. I think its just good practice to check from time to time and I suspect that a lot of school NM's do it regularly. It also means we can keep a list of regular offenders and report them up the chain of command (we don't do pastoral work - we just delete the files!) I think that although there are technical "solutions" its one of those things where you need to "wander around" from time to time just to get a feel of what is happening and what's out there.

I think Quota would be best TBH. Both staff and students get quota here and if they go over we take a look at what sort of files are using the space, normally 2GB is fine for staff except in exceptional circumstances.

 

A previous place we found a student with 7 gig of pirate games and videos.

WINDIRSTAT has long been an excelent tool for quickly tracking down large files.

 

FSRM with quotas works well generaly.

 

And also asking form tutors to point out that it's a breack of both copywrite law, and the AUP that you have asked the pupils to sign.

I'm sorry I can beat all of you. We never bother with quotas as we have always had plenty of storage however couple months ago I noticed our storage drop 400gb in roughly a week. So I went snooping. Turned out a sixth former bought in a USB hard drive and uploaded to our network loads of dvd, music, years of photos.

I archived it all off on to a spare server i am still waiting for her to come claim and it today
