Educational IT Jobs

 

I would love to get out of IT completely but that is just not going to happen. I really can't see myself doing another 20 years of this so what to do.......I never really left to be honest - life just got in the way

What about working towards some sort of project management? Prince2, Itil, or maybe infrastructure?

Hi Witch - in all honesty, I could not of anything worse than that !! That sort of thing just does not appeal to me at all. As I have found out lately, me and any form of management responsibility are just completely non compatible.

Ahh. Just trying to think of something with IT in it but not actually IT if you see what I mean.

So - you need to be a technical person on your own then? What other transferable skills do you have?

Yes! What do you actually want to do? What interests and engages you? You have 20 (probably +) years of working life left - you are a) by no means too old for most things and b) if you plan over that time scale, there is no reason you can't achieve almost whatever you want.

To be honest I don't think i can really get out of the realm of IT. It's all I've really done now for the last 20 years. I may have a few transferable skills so I think I will sit down one evening and note down my achievements that I've done over the last 10 years or so.

My main concern is salary - I can't afford to drop what I'm earning ( one of my sons probably off to Uni soon so have to consider that ) and my other son won't be long in regards to working out what he wants to do. My main areas of concern are keeping the same level of salary ( ish ) while at the same time taking a role of not as much responability as i have now however, I don't think this is really possible but you never know. 44 years of age really sucks ;-)

I feel your pain. I'm having the same thoughts, and am in the same position re: salary requirements. I'm a bit younger at 35, but it still seems as impossible. Especially as I can't actually figure out what I want to do...

@mattx - you might have to look at the longer term planning because of Uni etc. But i am sure you have got things you can do and need to look at jobs that slide you across into something else.

While that's true, you have to bear in mind that there will already be people with experience in the field Matt might want to move into, and an employer is more likely going to choose the candidate with experience rather than someone new to the field who might not even enjoy it.

 

I fancied moving out of IT and doing something outdoors, like a ranger kind of thing. But there are bright young things with years of university and study behind them who will always get the jobs. A love of the outdoors just isn't going to cut it on the application form.

 

In the current employment climate I think when you get to our age (40+) you just have to stick to what you know and hope it lasts until retirement.

You are correct Gibbo and really I know that. I have a lot going through my head at the moment so I need to start doing something about it thats for sure.
