DJ-1701 Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 This is for a family member who will mostly be using Office/Finance programs, a lot of browsing and some light gaming (i.e. Web Based/Microsoft Store Apps). Previously an i3 has been reported as a tad sluggish. Wish I could just build up a laptop like I can a PC, would be so much easier . If anyone could suggest or recommend a nicely priced laptop which has the following core components I would be most grateful . 17 inch screen. i5 or equivalent processor. 1TB Hard Drive. OS isn't too important, as I have a spare Windows license and I'll be able to upgrade the RAM if need be. Many thanks .

Only reason I say that is obviously most of what you said doesn't need 1TB etc and most will come with 500GB on cheaper end machines, and 17 inches isn't going to make a huge difference to usage, but will for price If you really want those specs I'd be tempted with one of the HP envys £700~ (even pcworld has some offers "shock" HP ENVY 17-n060na 17.3" Laptop - Silver Deals | PC World ) But if you didn't care that much about 17" etc you could easily drop that price by £200~ for 15" As an example http://www.ebuyer.com/724984-hp-250-g4-laptop-n1a92ea-abu £300 + £50 for 1TB HDD upgrade, and you've saved £350 Steve Edited December 20, 2015 by Steve21 1
DJ-1701 Posted December 20, 2015 Author Posted December 20, 2015 Thanks Steve for the suggestions and good questions . It's due to their requirements. With regard to the Hard Drive size it is down to historical data, of which there is a lot (including video and photos). The reason for the 17 inch is due to eye sight, though I have suggested the 15 inch should be fine, they feel much more comfortable with a 17 inch.

Chuckster Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Check to see if the HP laptop that Steve has suggested can take an additional SSD/harddrive in lieu of the DVD-RW. That way you can have an SSD for the OS and the HDD for data. My HP laptop can do this. 1

That way you can have an SSD for the OS and the HDD for data. My HP laptop can do this. Even if it can't, you can buy adapter said from Amazon that let you mount 2.5" devices in CD bays. I've done this for my iMac and MacBook Pro. If that's not an option, they'd be better getting a machine with an SSD and using a USB hard disk for mass storage. An i3 should be more than up to the task, especially considering that the difference between an i3 and i5 with mobile parts are pretty minimal. I think the i5 has a bigger cache and maybe more virtualisation instructions but that's it. A mobile i5 part is dual core, just like an i3. The slowness they felt was most likely due to a 5400rpm hard disk than the CPU. An SSD would alleviate this considerably. 2

How does the phrase go? 'You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink'. And yeah, would have dusted my hands of this if I was told they wanted one from PC World or Currys, lol. 2

You buy a new qualifying laptop, printer, computer and in exchange you send any old laptop, printer, computer back to them. https://tradeuptohp.com/gb/en/pages/tradein/home my own case study I bought 100 x Prodesk 400 G1 for £380 per unit (ex VAT). I returned a mixture of 100 dx2300, dx2200 and 500B mini tower pc. I know in my case study I am swapping HP for HP but it really doesn't matter. I received £150 per unit cashback approximately 3 months later. you have to organise everything from the collection, the palleting and make sure all the computers are in a reasonable state, but definitely worth the money. 2
NviGate_Systems Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 I'm in Canada so price/warranty is a little different here, but Acer makes some decent laptops and you should be able to get extra warranty for cheap. Here in Canada, Acer sells an extra 2 years for about $200.00 CDN, so if you think about three years of coverage it can save you big. Plus, this coverage is with Acer not some third party that insists on not replacing things that Acer would normally cover. I think Acer also does business as Gateway, eMachines and Packard Bell in the EU. Just make sure you have regular scheduled backups as I've seen so many drives fail that you would hate to lose info and end up spending big for recovery. I'm also glad you are not buying and AMD laptop.
