AJWhite1970 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 (edited) It was working when I posted it but I see it's down at the moment. If you want it ASAP, PM me and I'll send it over Andrew EDIT: The site has just started working again for me again... Edited December 14, 2015 by AJWhite1970

Might be worth having a play with this? Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 for Windows 10 Andrew Can I ask how? From my reading, this requires you to be logged in as the user to tweak it, but the method I'm using will break the start menu if you login with the exported default profile. I'm not a huge fan of introducing third party software as an integral part of the operating system, it's just more points of failure, but I'll be looking at Classic Shell some more if Microsoft don't buck their ideas up about the start menu. All this unified GUI lark is making it awful for Enterprise users.

All this unified GUI lark is making it awful for Enterprise users. I agree with your statement 100%, but the only reason I've deployed Classic Shell, is simply because it's anyone's guess as to when Microsoft will (if ever) resolve this issue consistently. It's clear the issue is there in builds 10240 and 10586 and it isn't until sometime next year another large update will be released. Classic Shell works now and is fully updateable/manageable via Group Policy and GPP Regedit, so it buys us all a lot of time until Microsoft investigate this issue properly
AJWhite1970 Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 Can I ask how? From my reading, this requires you to be logged in as the user to tweak it, but the method I'm using will break the start menu if you login with the exported default profile. At the moment I'm finding that using the LTSB version with Classic Shell and all the rubbish disabled using UWT that the old and utterly not supported trick of using Windows Enabler and copying the setup profile to the default profile still works. I'm testing it to destruction at present and have yet to find anything that's broken logging in as a new user and all the custom settings have migrated fine. I may yet find something that kills this but at the moment, looking very hopeful with redirected start menu, desktop, document folders etc all working. I've still got AppData on C at the moment but I never redirected that folder in Windows 7 so may not do it in 10.... Andrew
DevilsAdvocate Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 Anyone else having an issue with the menu not redirecting the first login after a reboot? Log out and back in and it works fine.
Michael Posted December 16, 2015 Author Posted December 16, 2015 Anyone else having an issue with the menu not redirecting the first login after a reboot? Log out and back in and it works fine. Not seen that behaviour, but it's not a massive issue. Similar applies if you deploy the MSI using PDQ Deploy or similar. A restart is still required for Classic Shell to become active.
paulr522 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Anyone else having an issue with the menu not redirecting the first login after a reboot? Log out and back in and it works fine. I'm having this issue. It's driving me insane! User logs in, no shortcuts appear in the start menu. (They will appear after 10 mins or so which is obviously ridiculous.) User logs out and back in again and the shortcuts appear straight away. Any ideas?
paulr522 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Are you using the OP's solution? Same method yes..
edie209 Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I am not getting anywhere with this, so I have reimported the settings to start from scratch and I have noticed that only these settings import is this correct? This is the Cirric policy
Michael Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 I am not getting anywhere with this, so I have reimported the settings to start from scratch and I have noticed that only these settings import is this correct? This is the Cirric policy Like standard GPOs, you need to pay attention to which Operating Systems the policy applies to and likewise, some GPOs are for the Ultra Classic Start Menu and not the Windows 7 Start Menu. This is why you need to customise settings (within Classic Shell itself), which uses XML. This can then be exported from the registry and imported using GPP Regedit. If you import the GPOs I've uploaded, you can see a working example of what I've done, then change any required settings (if applicable).
sparkeh Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 @Michael Thanks for your postings and work around getting a viable Win 10 Start Menu. Its so frustrating that MS can't give us a working, controllable start menu but this seems to fit the bill.

Achandler Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) Are people using redirected start menus? We never had done because I prefer that they get a modified copy of the start menu from that workstation, but in Windows 10 with Classic Shell on the start menu I get "Windows Powershell" and "Windows System". Neither are from the ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu folder. I assume they are coming from the users profile, we haven't yet set up a mandatory profile for Windows 10, and to be honest I was debating whether to use one or not, due to other issues around them within Windows 10. But I can't have those items appearing on the start menu whether they can be run or not. Edited January 8, 2016 by Achandler Typos

Achandler Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I don't really want to use a redirected start menu if possible but I need to remove these extras from the start menu somehow. I'll have to look at both options.
sparkeh Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) Quick question about the GPO settings. Is it me or are they setup a bit weird? So for example, if I want to turn off automatic updating and stop the user from altering the setting, do I set that option to 'disabled' or do I enabled it but not tick the box to enable auto updating and lock the setting. Does that make sense? It seems you have to enable the setting but then not enable it in the options to be able to lock it. Edit: Hmm looks like you enable the GPO setting then set the options below. Garacesh Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Yes, there are a lot of double-negatives in GPO so they could be written better. Usually though, the description is quite well written and tells you what you need to know.
sparkeh Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Quick question. How are people controlling the pinned section of the Start Menu?
Michael Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 Quick question. How are people controlling the pinned section of the Start Menu? I don't think you can - it's user specific, but the All Programs menu is controllable using Folder Redirection (Start Menu).
Garacesh Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I don't think you can - it's user specific, but the All Programs menu is controllable using Folder Redirection (Start Menu). Does this get rid of all the standard shortcuts (3DBuilder, etc)? I've been fighting with deployment and drivers so I've not had chance to check yet.
sparkeh Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) I don't think you can - it's user specific, but the All Programs menu is controllable using Folder Redirection (Start Menu). Well I was thinking of setting a gpp to copy shortcuts to '%appdata%\roaming\classicshell\pinned' which should set the pinned apps (as long as you're as telling the Start Menu to use the classicshell pinned folder rather than the standard start menu). But yes this would be per user which is a bit of a PITA. Just wondering if anyone had any better ideas? Having apps pinned might be good for our younger users. Edited January 11, 2016 by sparkeh
