Students watching youtube videos using Bing

Hi everyone,

 

I have our provider looking into it now but came across an issue where students are able to watch youtube videos by using Bing and just mousing over the thumbnails. Not sure if this is an issue any of you guys have come across and if so what did you block?

Hi @Edu-IT as per our advisories we send out, we recommend you block bing until bing for schools is released.

That was my concern also, which is why I haven't just asked for Bing to be blocked. Using Office 2013 here so it would most definitely upset people

Doesn't work. They're somehow pulling in the content and displaying it in a window.

 

They must be passing the YouTube URL through some sort of script on their site so it doesn't present as coming from YouTube URL?

Looks like you're right - the videos come from http://.mm.bing.net/th?id= with content type video/mp4. Unfortunately all the media (images, etc) also seems to come from similar URIs. All the videos I've tried appear to have IDs starting with "OMB" so you could try blocking http://*.mm.bing.net/th?id=OMB* but I don't know if this would catch them all and/or cause other stuff to break. Alternatively you could block anything with a content type of video/mp4 but unless you can restrict that block to only the bing website it would obviously block videos on all websites!

 

(Note: I've not actually tried any of these suggestions, they are just what occur to me having looked at the requests being made)

So I have found a setting for it. This turns off the thumbnails and makes them still images instead. Is this something we can manage?

Just checked this on my homegrown Dansguardian/Squid setup and if the video is blocked on Youtube its also blocked when I try and access it using a Bing video search. I have Google/Youtube locked in restricted mode using DNS and also block explicit.bing.net.

Is that definitely when you're just hovering over the thumbnail, e.g. ?

My mistake for not reading original post ! Yes the thumbnails do show the video.

 

I think you can block the thumbnails by excluding mm.bing.net in addition to explicit.bing.net - however this does make Bing look a bit messy.
