markwatkins Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Hi all Today I was asked to go to a group of PCs that had been locked out by the BIOS password being changed from setup to always. All of our PCs have a BIOS password so no pupil should have been able to access the BIOS. Is anyone aware of a back door way into BIOS? Needless to say if they have got the BIOS password there are approx 600 PCs that need to have it changed! I don't want to do that unless forced
ChrisH Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 There is sometimes a jumper on the motherboard specificially for the password settings. Otherwise you could flip the battery out and drain the power.
Geoff Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 It's possible to reset or blank the BIOS password by: physically pulling the battery out or setting a motherboard jumper using software such as cmospwd. using a backdoor password 1
markwatkins Posted January 18, 2008 Author Posted January 18, 2008 There is sometimes a jumper on the motherboard specificially for the password settings. Otherwise you could flip the battery out and drain the power. Yes knew that but they have hacked it without dismantling it !! Geoff # using software such as cmospwd. # using a backdoor password am trying that seems that AMI use password as one!!!
Michael Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Then I would say they have guessed the password unfortunately
markwatkins Posted January 18, 2008 Author Posted January 18, 2008 Doubt that it involves dollar signs and a few other geeky ideas!!!
Gerry Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Could be they've found a backdoor password: http://www.tech-faq.com/reset-bios-password.shtml
tech_guy Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Are these Dell PCs? On like the Dell GX520s you have to lock the password as well as setting the System password. If you forget they can get in and set the setup password.
markwatkins Posted January 18, 2008 Author Posted January 18, 2008 Unhappily I am unable to replicate what the little cherub has done... so far at least but thanks for your help so far. Mark
Domino Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Have you considered torture? jack bauer does consultancy?
Gerry Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Just another thought, we have some PC's with a BIOS that allows you to set it to view only for users.
ICT_GUY Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 My guess, if they are older pcs, is that the bios battery is flat, so the password was wiped over xmas when the PC was shut down for an extended period. It took a while for someone to notice and they poked around and locked the bios.
markwatkins Posted January 21, 2008 Author Posted January 21, 2008 Torture is a possibility! is it legal? Doubt that the bios battery has gone flat as PCs were Ok the previous day... have tried the various backdoor offerings and none of them worked. They are Tulips and don't appear to have an option to lock password. Once again Thanks for your help we are now sitting with crossed fingers waiting for it to happen again and then the torture will begin
Geoff Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Torture is a possibility! is it legal? I believe you ok if you declare they are conducting terrorism.
markwatkins Posted January 21, 2008 Author Posted January 21, 2008 I believe you ok if you declare they are conducting terrorism. it is definitely terrorism!
