Redirecting Fonts system folder to a network share.

Hi

 

I would like to redirect C:\Windows\Fonts to an invisible network share named \\servername\fonts$. Can this be done using group policy? This is so that if a student or child would like to use a new font, I can simply drag and drop the new font into the share and the machines will pick it up automatically? I tried copying fonts to all machines on the network using a startup script, copying the fonts across the network at startup, but this seemed to result being a bit hit and miss.

Theres some scripts floating about on here for adding fonts. From what I recall there are registry entries involved as well. If someone could get the method you propose to work that would be great but something tells me it wont be possible. I think I could probably make an MSI to do it though if I looked at a few of these scripts.

I should think this would make any application that uses fonts incredibly slow!

 

BTW do check licensing for fonts, they are often very expensive, and there have been big fines in the past for using unlicensed fonts

That would mean that if you lose network connectivity for a while, you'll have no fonts! I'm not sure I'd want to risk that. How about a script that pulls down new fonts on startup?

Interesting idea, but I think a script (which you were already using) would still be the best method.

 

To be honest logic says that if it has been hit and miss, it could be to do with local admin rights to the machines themselves. No doubt you restrict access to C:\ for everyone apart from domain admins.

I doubt windows could handle this, what about the fonts on the basic bootup dialogs before windows networking is enabled. If windows could handle 2 folder locations (e.g. c:\ and \\server) then maybe. It could lead to issues though and I would probably use a script.
