It's an old Bosch machine and I've had 14 years out of it so I can't complain (much!) - but I now need a new machine which can live in an outhouse (so cold in the winter). Anyone care to share what might be good?
Miscbrah Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Might be worth pulling the top off and checking the belt's not slipping/hosed. Swapping a belt is a doddle* and might keep it alive for a couple more years. *Your mileage may vary. 1

I'm wondering about repair, it's likely just the brushes on the motor but is it worth repairing a 14 year old machine? (likely cost - either £75 to get someone to do it or £3.50 for brushes if I attempt the DIY (how the heck do carbon brushes even last 14 years on a washing machine)).

Anyone care to share what might be good? It might be worth attempting a repair (or finding someone who can at a reasonable price) but failing that it depends on how much washing you are doing. I have a Hotpoint washer dryer and it cost around £300 and has worked really well, but I only need use it once a week as a rule. If you are washing a ton of stuff every day then it will be worth investing a bit more - Miele for example (I had one and the quality and service is superb). 1

There's a small leak I need to investigate too (having it in the outhouse has made me lazy to look at that). I'm a little worried that with a 14 year old machine it will go again at a really inconvenient time - playing outdoor tennis 3 or 4 times a week through the winter tends to mean lots of layers and lot's of washing. I don't have enough spare kit to go more than a week without doing a wash so an unsuccessful repair eats into that time.

Duranis Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Can't help on the recommendation but have replaced the brushes on a few machines and its dead easy. It is normally exactly what is wrong in this type of situation as well. The only pain can be trying to get the right ones to fit an older machine, I have had to modify a few in the past to make them fit.
pcstru Posted November 25, 2015 Author Posted November 25, 2015 Having phoned a repairer for a quote (£75 if it was the brushes) and another to see if they had brushes in stock, I booked the afternoon off, and went for the brushes. £30 rather than £3 - that's a "genuine Bosch" premium which seems a bit excessive over the £3 generic items. Post price shock (I'm Scottish, it hurts), I got my hands black with carbon dust and availed myself of the DIY dictionary of choice sweary words and spent a couple of hours figuring out how to get the motor out and new brushes in (ultra fiddly - there must be some clever tool for that). The old brushes still had 5mm or so on them, so I wasn't very hopeful. Put it all back together chucked the load it failed to do last night back in and ... it seems to be working! Perhaps I might get another 14 years out of it yet. Thanks to all for your contributions. 1
newpersn Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 I just brought a hotpoint sline washing machine 8kg 1400spin. Great so far (had it over a month although the Eco Cotten wash takes 3 hours.... (We just use cottons normal)

plexer Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Even with 5mm or so left it's likely they weren't making enough contact to make it work. Recently replaced the brushes on ours the drum would turn but not spin. Ben
