Two new users are on the network and can ping google but cannot connect to the internet

I have recently got a new job as an IT support officer at a college, completely different than what i'm used to (QA Background) and have been left in charge of the network for the next 4 weeks after the IT manager left.

I am very inexperienced and have never managed a network before but i'm getting by... until two users that where set up just before the manager left (myself and the IT apprentice) have suddenly lost access to the internet everything worked until Friday afternoon (no hardware change) we can access our network and can ping google but cannot access internet through any browsers.

It's not our user profiles as we can both access the internet through other PCs on the network.

Has anybody got any ideas? I'm hoping things are going to run relatively smoothly until the IT managers replacement starts and I'm also hoping to make a good impression before he does.

Check on computers that work for you that proxy settings and if they are different change it on your computer. Maybe worth checking your school firewall to see if your computers are in a block list.

check all of your security groups in Active Directory and theirs... sometimes filtering can be applied to security groups (well on lightspeed anyways) and if they aren't a member of any of the groups, there might be a 'block all' thing going on.

Still having this issue and it's quite annoying. Myself and a colleague started working at about the same time and where given a PC each. There are 3 PCs in our office JB RG and LB I get internet connection on LB and my colleague does on JB but we cannot get internet connection on the others. Our user profiles in AD where an exact copy of the previous IT managers and I cannot see him putting up with the problems we have.

I cannot make sense of this problem at all as throughout the college I maybe have internet access on 50% of the PC's I have used and there are no other users students or staff who have reported a similar isssue. I have spent maybe 6- 8 hours trawling through forums and trying everything but I'm still non the wiser.

So are IP's correct on each of the machines?

Are the default gateway settings all the same?

Is there a proxy server address in Internet Settings > Network > Proxy ? Is it the same on all 3 machines?

Hi Joanne, yes all 3 IP's are correct and under Internet properties LAN settings > Proxy Server is unticked (although there is a proxy address that is greyed out) just checked and this is the same across all 3 machines.

What filtering system / proxy server are you using?

If you create a shiny new account (don't copy one) and add it to the same groups as your user account, what happens?

I'm not massively familiar with Sophos UTM. Sorry. Keep the thread alive by posting and hopefully someone who uses that will be along shortly!

Could you try enabling the greyed out proxy by ticking it?

Also your previous NM may have set the proxy in a different location, which might be why it's working for some machines.

Search for cmd in the start menu, right-click it and click 'Run as administrator'. Type the following command and hit enter:

netsh winhttp show proxy

Does it come back with anything?

This is what I was about to recommend to check...

Yeah it's Sophos though...

Could you check the logs on the proxy? Do you have access to it? Run a report on the machine you don't get internet on and see if it shows anything. If it seems to be blocking stuff, you know the issue lies with the proxy and not the machines.

ok I have just noticed this today as well, i was on a teachers PC and 'switched user' to myself and I had internet access but when I had to reboot and log in as myself the internet access had gone again.
