Simcfc73 Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Hi, I have been asked about streaming a live webchat with a few other school to do with the Erasmus project. Looks like it will be in a hall so I imagine the camera would need to be a HD one but just wanted to ask others if they have done something similar. I had a play with youtube live broadcasting yesterday which sort of worked but need a decent webcam to try in anger.... especially with sound. I have 2 fibre broadband feeds so will look at using one for the live streaming only too so I can get a bit more speed out of it. Easier to hire the kit or buy in?

You could then use something like Ustream to broadcast with. If you are intending to use multiple cameras then you will need a vision mixer of some sort.

Joanne Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 I've been asked to research this. I'm just doing it locally, so was going to use some software called 'webcam 7'. I'm thinking of getting a decent camera and microphone.... @Simcfc73 - have you done it yet and how did it go?
Simcfc73 Posted January 5, 2016 Author Posted January 5, 2016 I haven't yet, I purchased a Logitech C920-C and have tested it using Skype for Business, I can do conferencing via a webpage using this and it seems ok.... and its free with our MS agreement

I'm just looking at an HD camera on CPC, the Microsoft Lifecam, does 720p. I'm wondering if my office might be the best studio - powerful computer, quiet and could put a backdrop behind the kids....

CAWJames Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 We use "Cinema's" and Samson products, very reasonable and do the job admirably, We have at least 2 dedicated conferencing suites at each centre, and a mobile TV at each one. All equipped with those as basic kit. has saved a shedload of meeting miles, enough to buy a very big shed anyway We can also use these for webinar/blasting, and now we have Planet eStream, they can be used for lecture capture too Happy days! 1
Joanne Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 I'm just in a primary and want to tick more boxes for ICT use. I'd totally love to run a little TV station with the kids though. I do one at my other school, but I can't really get as involved as I'm only there a few hours a week.
DavR Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 We did a couple of very successful video conferencing assemblies last term just using Google Hangouts (I would have used Skype myself, but the other end was a Google employee and thus wedded to the system). We had a hall full of kids and a teacher with a microphone attached to the PC, we didn't have a webcam to hand, so we had someone on their phone connect as a third person to the chat to provide the picture. The other end had proper video conferencing kit, and we put him up on the projector and the hall speakers. Rough and ready, but the concept worked and the kids engaged really well. We're primary, at this level it really doesn't need to be perfect to get them excited!
Chris_ Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 We use a Teradek Vidiu (Teradek VidiU HDMI H264 Live Streaming Encoder | Teradek, LLC - Wireless HD Video) to stream some of our school events via YouTube. It's not the cheapest of options but it's certainly a neat little box of tricks! It has a HDMI in to connect a camera for video and audio, it also has an additional audio input for external microphones, it has built in wired LAN, wi-fi, and a USB port for 3G/4G dongle and a battery for mobile streaming. Out of the box it supports a few streaming services such as YouTube, UStream, Livestream etc but can also be manually configured for others.

Joanne Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Hoping to get the camera and microphone late this week / next week and then I can fully test it. The skype thing looks pretty good because you can have queued videos (from what I've read) so could play an intro and have a live feed of kids reading news, then play a little video of them reporting outside and all sorts of things. I read that you can also record it all. Am I overcomplicating things do you think? How did you use it?
Simcfc73 Posted January 7, 2016 Author Posted January 7, 2016 I did a test on a simple webpage and it worked but I did buy a Skype for Business Online (Plan 2) license as the Skype Meeting Broadcast licensing is not covered in edu or charity licenses. (I may be wrong)

zag Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Anyone have any ideas whats best for streaming school music concerts? We used a mac to stream to youtube live and it worked surprisingly well, but the audio quality was not really good enough.

You can broadcast from an iPad or iPhone too. Use an external mic with an iRig device and the sound would be great. I have used it for music performances, bake off's and now use it for our annual Speech Day. Avoid things like Periscope and Meerkat like the plague in education, they are not appropriate.
Simcfc73 Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Seem to getting an error when I try and start a meeting. Your company policy doesn't allow you to use Skype Meeting Broadcast. Check with your system admin to make sure the service is enabled and that you have the correct license. I have a Skype for Business Online (Plan 2) so it should work.
