Hi,

Not sure if this is in totally the right forum so if anyone wants to me move it feel free.

I wanted to ask fellow IT in education types: how do you handle you IT induction? As in getting a new user base to login, access resources like the VLE, Pro Monitor etc.

In the past for our new students were allocated to a IT classroom with usually a teacher and technician to support them in the first two days of term. Then the students were asked to login, click on promonitor, set up their college email etc. We as IT found this useful because it meant students knew how to login. Any problems with login details etc were spotted early and after the first week of term everyone had logged in successfully and been told the do's and don't of the system......

Last September this was changed so the students had to wait until their tutorial before they received their login details and an introduction to the system usually just with 1 member of staff. We also stayed in an LRC for an hour a day as a mop up session but this was poorly attended. We then started to see students who had never logged on, or had been struggling with issues.

Do you get students at your organisation to login en masse? Do you have them watching a presentation or video? Would be interested to hear what others do.

Thanks

We have all the new year 7 in before the summer holidays and we have two 2 hour sessions (1 hour per class, we have 4 tutor groups of each year, apart from 6th form) and we give everyone a generic password which they are all forced to change at the beginning of the session, then get them to write it in their planners for when they join us proper in September. We have a powerpoint of a hand full of slide which state some of the do and don'ts of the system as well as some basic internet safety, explains the email system and how to access work and email from home.

On the whole its fine, there will always be a couple who forget or write it down wrong and maybe some who were away when the induction sessions took place.

Also we open a computer room at lunchtime on the days of the induction manned by us technicians, so anyone who had issues earlier can get it sorted and for anyone who wants to explore of our system can have a bash!

Normally the first time new student would log on is in their first IT class and they go from there, but we have a help sheet that is given out to all users at the start of each year explaining how to log and us e-mail. Edited by Grey-gear

As a college, we make the not unfair assumption that students have used a computer before they've come to us. On induction day, they are given their user name (student number) and password (dob with some extra characters in) and they are encouraged to login and explore the student portal. This has links to moodle, email, library, student handbook, etc. They are also advised to change their password. They then go away for two months and come back, having forgotten their password, so in the first week, we have a line of 850 new students outside our office all wanting their password reset. They are also shown moodle and how to access email in the first PT session. Instruction in accessing email is done by showing them a video.
