Good morning one and all,

I have just had to replace a very very old Allied Telesis switch that died over the weekend with a Netgear GS724Tv3 and I'm struggling to uderstand why out of the 18 devices that are connected to it on 2 are operating at 1000mb, 11 are operating at a 100mb and 5 are operating at 10mb.

The switch itself was brand new and I updated it to the latest firmware when I got it out of the box. The devices that are plugged into it are the same (Small ICT suite) and everything is set to auto negotiate.

I'm confused!

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

I'd suspect the 5 at 10mb are asleep or are in power saving mode.

Were the machines on 100mb getting a gigabit connection on the previous switch?

What do the logs on the switch (and the event log on the PC) say when you plug in a PC?

We are predominantly using Netgear in school and we have several of the GS724Tv3 switches. I've got a few devices that are showing 100Mb on the switch but these are not computers; things like photocopiers, a barcode scanner etc.

You need CAT5e for true Gb so it may be that you have some older CAT5 cabling somewhere. Firstly I'd check your patch cables at the cabinet end and the PC end as these are the easiest to replace.

Thanks for the replies so far.

The 100mb connections are peripheral devices. Looks like the previous technician we had has done a cack handed job of labeling things! Looks like I'll have to go through these and check them again.

As for the 10mb devices, 1 is a wireless AP and the rest are desktops. I will check for driver updates on these machines tomorrow and then go via the log route to see if anything gets flagged up.

Cheers

I'd put money on it being something physical e.g. CAT5 not CAT5e, or older cable suffering from crosstalk/interference due to poor routing etc...

Hi there, we are fully cat 5e here and on one of the machines I have already replaced the cable as a just in case.

Looking at the PC's this morning, the few I have issues with are for some reason running a very old realtek nic driver. Why I don't know because the same image should have been used throughout the room. The PC image has a much newer drivers.

I am just reimaging one of the machines and will see what happens. . .

Will keep you posted!

Sometimes the switch just won't auto-detect speed so try forcing it to 100 full and see if that helps, I know my Laptop didn't want to play ball with a switch at a conference venue the other week so I forced it to 100 full and it was fine then. The newest firmware may have a bug in it, annoying but perfectly possible.
