MikeGreen Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Hi All, I am hoping someone could point us in the right direction. We have a 100mb leased line through schools broadband and a lot of staff a complaining of slow internet especially when using our MIS system Integris, Sisra and classcharts. I must admit that I haven't experienced this issue on my PC but I don't use those systems. I have logged in to them and navigated around but haven't done any work in them. I have however seen the speed issues first hand and I have contacted Schools Broadband who have said that we are using around 40mb of our line so we should be fine. Users are using either IE10 or Chrome and problems are the same in both. I have ensured that all drivers on machines are up to date. They have good machines (i5, 4gb etc.) which are fairly new. There's no processors ballooning the cpu etc. speed test comes back good on the machines ping = 16ms download of 86mb upload of 87mb but using these sites is painfully slow. The owners of the systems (Integris etc) have confirmed that they are not having any issues and I have spoken to neighbouring schools who use the systems and they don't see these issues. Any ideas would be greatly welcomed. Thanks Mike
FN-GM Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Have you had a look at the firewalls and proxy servers? 1
sted Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 i seem to remember schools broadband changing their dns servers a while back is the dns forwarding on all dcs correct? 1
SchoolsBroadband Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 @MikeGreen, smells like a DNS issue to me. Check your DNS forwarders on your Windows server(s) if they're responsible for your internal DNS. Also check if you have any DNS servers manually configured on each PC too. If you need me to get involved let me know and PM me the ticket number. Thanks Dave 1
MikeGreen Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 Thanks for the replies. Firstly, our firewall is hosted by schools broadband and has been checked. We don't use a proxy server we have a lightspeed device and we have ruled this out by adding an internal ignore for a machine so it just bypasses the device. DNS has been checked and has 2 entry back to talk-straight servers which I'm 99% is correct but am having it double checked.

Are your DC's forwarding onto a public DNS? 1
MikeGreen Posted November 9, 2015 Author Posted November 9, 2015 Hi @FN_GM, yes, all clients point to the DC's and then the DC 's are forwarding to the talks straight dns servers
FN-GM Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Hi @FN_GM, yes, all clients point to the DC's and then the DC 's are forwarding to the talks straight dns servers Have you check both DC's have the forwarding DNS? These need to be entered manually on each and they do not replicate. Have you tried changing the forwarding DNS to someone like Google to see if it helps? Thanks 1
Oaktech Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Hi @FN_GM, yes, all clients point to the DC's and then the DC 's are forwarding to the talks straight dns servers Is there anything stopping you from changing them to someone else to see what happens? 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 should prove one way or another? Le Edit... Damn, beat me to it! 1
MikeGreen Posted November 11, 2015 Author Posted November 11, 2015 ok, so had confirmed by @SchoolsBroadband that our DNS entries were correct have tried googles DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) and also tried removing all forward DNS all together and none of this makes any difference. could anything on the switches be causing this? we have a 3rd party which manages our switches is there anything I could be asking them to look at? Thanks again for all the help
SchoolsBroadband Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Have you tried removing your lan and just plugging in a laptop to the router to see what results you get? This will eliminate if it's a lan problem or not? When you bio it male sure you call our support team to check the duplex is OK. Dave
MikeGreen Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 Hi @SchoolsBroadband, In the past we have tried this and we see the same speed test results as when we are on the lan. The problem with this is that we are unable to provide enough downtime for a user such as the data manager to work this way to check if it better when actually using the affected systems.
SchoolsBroadband Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 ok well if you've had a laptop plugged into the router and are not getting full speeds then something probably isn't right elsewhere. We have no speed issues on our core network though and don't have any similar faults from any other customers to my knowledge. I'm on the road today but will take up with my support team tomorrow morning. Watch this space and thanks for your patience David
sted Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 could you set up an unused port on the router as a test and plug a laptop into that not an ideal test but you wouldnt have to turn internet off for other people to test it?
SchoolsBroadband Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 yes we can do that and build another VLAN back to the customers site but if other clients are still using the Internet the doing a speed test on a single PC connected to another port will not give a true accurate speedtest as other clients will be using the Internet bandwidth..... If (and not just for this customer) people are thinking they have speed issues and can't disconnect the LAN then suggest its done out of hours
MikeGreen Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 @SchoolsBroadband the speeds we get are good wether through the lan or direct in the router but its the sites that run terrible.
Michael Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 What speed(s) is your internal LAN operating at? If it's only 100Mbps and your WAN is 100Mbps, this doesn't help. Most modern computers are capable of processing considerably higher amounts of data. Ideally your internal LAN should all be running at Gigabit speeds if you're running a 100Mbps WAN. Another possibility is of course loopbacks - are you running Spanning Tree?
cpjitservices Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 How are the PC's connecting to the network.. maybe you have a faulty switch ? MTU settings on the router ? Try plugging in directly to your WAN port and see how the connection is.
SchoolsBroadband Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 This could be MTU related (although we have standard configs so the MTU should be fixed). It certainly sounds very odd. I'll pick up with my engineers in the morning. Thanks Dave
Cache Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) I'm just going to pipe in here that a primary school I support were migrated to the hosted solution last week and the speed I have been told has been awful ever since. Will find out more details tomorrow. Edited November 12, 2015 by Cache

Will find out more details tomorrow. Hi @Cache will send you a PM to find out which school it is and I'll investigate for you this morning. We don't have any speed issues on the hosted platform. With the big windows and office updates on Tuesday we saw a lot of customers max their lines out (particular when on slower DSL) but have not had any speed issue reports since. I'll be in touch. Thanks Dave 1
SchoolsBroadband Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 No problem. Just been to see my support manager. You'll get a call today whilst a senior engineer looks into it for you 1
mikeyw Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I reported the same problem at our school yesterday as we were experiencing the same problem and today it hasn't been very quick either. But was told we were only using 30-40mb on our line.
