It's ages, possibly years, since I last had one of these... so long, that it actually made me smile to see the bad spellings and terrible English when I found it in my spam box

The email was allegedly sent from a James Ehij from an aol.fr email address... if it had come from a Bank of Africa email I might have taken him up on his offer

I was amazed to get a 419 type spam-scam, with about the same literary quality as yours, sent to me by snail mail to the school. Not sure I can see that exactly taking off for them.

 

Meanwhile, our enquiries address has been used as the from address in some spammers campaign and we now have 200,000 bounces and rising cluttering up the mail box.

Most people will ignore/delete the e-mail leaving the scammers with just the gullible and easy to con.

That's one of the theories behind it, yes. You'll notice that once a "mugu" responds and it gets fired up the chain, the spelling will get better. To some degree it makes sense as a tactic.. Make the holes in the net as big as possible and only the weakest will be snared - in this case the gullible, greedy, and not-online-savvy.

 

Also for anybody interested, 419 Eater - The largest scambaiting community on the planet! I used to enjoy messing with them. Haven't done in a while.

I was the CEO of some company or other of which I can't remember the name, Drew Peacock. I sold Gigaquads of PC memory.. and even had an online phone number/voicemail. I went whole-hog with this. The idea being if a bunch of people that know what they're doing waste these scammers time, it becomes less and less profitable and more and more difficult to determine the difference between a seasoned computer vet and a clueless end-user.

 

There was one guy who was a priest in a church, but was only able to give financial aid to members of his flock. Thus, there's now a bunch of scammers out there with 'Church of Barney' tattoed on themselves

 

Some people questionably extract money from the scammers themselves, which some consider morally acceptable, but I would sternly remind you it's still probably illegal.
