Recommend me a laptop please?

My youngest needs a new laptop and has been working and saving hard for many months.

 

He wants a pretty high spec machine as he does digital media/graphic design at university ... inevitably the machine also gets used for Xbox one gaming too.

 

He is after something with an i7 processor, a good graphics card, Windows 10 and ideally 16Gb of RAM and 1TB hard drive.

 

It's not going to be cheap , but there's a budget of around £900 (inc VAT) He is adamant that he doesn't want a Mac!

 

Any suggestions please?

Around the £675 mark including VAT; can't remember exactly. It can go a bit higher and stick within his budget (see opening post) ... the spec is important as he punishes it with the graphics work for his course. This is a personal purchase and not for school if that's OK with you.

This would be my choice - Gigabyte P17F 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop with NVIDIA GTX 950M - P17F V3-CF1 - Scan.co.uk

 

Leaves some cash to up the RAM to 16GB as well (appears to use DDR3L 1600 RAM, so an 8GB module would be about £37).

If he doesn't mind the extra chunk the new Alienware machines are lovely. I had an old model a while back and it was great. But pro tip try and buy from a re-seller online, buying them directly from Alienware is expensive for some reason - I bought mine new from eBay and saved around £300. The Alienware 13 would be my choice.

 

Don't under estimate the new Skylake integrated GPU's though, if he's looking for a powerful and very portable laptop a dedicated GPU laptop may be a bit hefty, I have a MacBook 12" Retina (I know you said no MacBooks but I'm just using it as an example) and it's sooooooo lightweight, mine has broad well GPU (one step below skylake) and I can play older games such as colin mcrae dirt 2, portal 2, sims 3 and others - it'll also play newer games if they don't rely heavily on graphics, I've been playing Prison Architect on it for months now can't get enough of it, all games will happily run at around 40fps so definitely playable.

 

But if he's looking to hardcore game on the thing the Alienware 13 would be my recommendation, couple that with a graphics amplifier if you can find a cheap one on eBay and your laughing!!

Big thanks to @VeryPC_Colin_M (and @VeryPC_Anthony_L ) for organising this laptop. It has arrived and is, I am informed, downloading Windows Updates at present. I've been sent a picture of the skin and it is very cool. Our "felt tip fairy in training" (Col knows what I mean) is delighted.
