Tesla Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Want to upgrade my PC to an SSD, having issues shrinking the Partition. I have a 1TB HD currently, split into two partitions, one is 494GB (C:\windows etc) The other is the rest (D:) I want to shrink the C: down to below 480GB so that i can use Clonezilla to image that and copy to my SSD (Which will be 480) however, the shrink wizard tells me there is exactly 0 MB with which to shrink, although i have over 150GB of space Haven't really messed with partitions before so don't wanna screw anything up.... Suggestions?

Tesla Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) I suppose i could try that (didn't even know that existed, I'm far too simple), though i have nothing to currently image too, so then i'd still be up the creek without a paddle if that doesn't work. Often this happens because you've used xGB which is less than the total capacity, but it's spread out over the whole partition/drive, so there isn't any contiguous space for the partition to shrink into. Persistence is key here - I've done it plenty of times with conversions to SSD from HDD as well as server reconfiguration. 1
Tesla Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 Windows Defrag was showing as 0% Fragmented, so i didn't bother with defraggler, i'll have a go with that aswell when i'm home

themightymrp Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 How about trying a gparted boot disk to do the resize? I've not used it before but I think its free GParted -- Download There is a resize-partition powershell cmdlet too, but I don't know if that works on system partitions??

The windows partition shrink tool will only shrink to what it considers to be the the last immovable block. Windows Defrag is not very persistent when it comes to moving stuff, so you can defrag 3 or 4 times and you might get a couple of hundred meg to a gig of shrinkage space. 3rd party defrag tools like defraggler and the ashampoo optimizer are way less precious/more aggressive about moving stuff than windows is and you will get more room to shrink. Tools like partition magic and the paid for versions of Easeus are able to move stuff out of the way on the fly. I've actually used an old version Easeus as a really agressive defrag by deliberately setting it to shrink the partition smaller than the data present on the drive. This particular version doesn't check at that point how much data is resident on the drive because it starts by moving as much data as it can. When it decides that it has optimized the data as much as it can it then errors and tells you it can't shrink the partition because there is more data than the partition size you chose will hold. Bingo, you have all the data rammed at the start of the drive, even the stuff windows said couldn't be moved!
