beancole Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Admin - could I suggest an iPad/tablet forum section? I am wanting to take the iPad plunge. I ant a trolley of iPads but how does everyone manage them? I have seen advertised sync stations. What I need to know is how does it work in schools, we have a new head whos previous school had 1 itunes account which they logged into all with. This is just dodgy isn't it as far as licences are concerned. I certainly cannot be bothered creating 30 accounts and downloading apps to each. what sort of server tech is there. (and before anyone says Google it I have, nothing seems to be coherent)
mikeprice Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I used to work in a school that had 1 single itunes account and installed the apps on over 50 iPads - it is certainly dodgy - in fact downright illegal When I raised it the answer was that it is too expensive to pay for every iPad!!!!! I put up with it only because I had an email from the bursar confirming that they knew it was wrong and because I was only there on a temp contract And - also I refused to update the iPads - another technician did that In that school if the iPads needed updating the otehr tech. booked them out for half a day and updated each one individually. There were charging cabs but the sync function couldn't be used due to the 'paying for apps' problem

This will give us an idea on the best method for you. <100 and you can use Meraki quite well. >100 and then you want to start looking at a mac server. I'm playing around with the server aspect of it at the moment, but not 100% on how it all works!

Joanne Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 You have to install the meraki app and then you can attach them to the MDM that way. If you get a macbook and use configurator you can skip the whole setup of each iPad thing. At some point you have to go on each one though to get them onto Meraki, which will then apply apps that you want and whatnot. Things are better with iOS 9 now because you don't need an apple ID for each iPad. If it is for sure that you are going to get some, sign up for VPP now.

We are now using it to monitor laptops given to student under the pupil premium scheme and will be linking staff laptops up to it so we can see who are actually using them. Would certainly recommend it for a free solution.

Goto; deploy.apple.com To sign up for both the Volume Purchase Program (for buying apps) and; Device Enrolment Program (so you can create a supervision profile using your MDM and go nowhere near Apple Configurator, if fact you won't even need a Mac) You would be best off creating a guest SSID so that you can then activate the iPads without typing passwords over and over, they get automatically enrolled into your MDM with a profile that can not be removed, you can then update the iPads to iOS9 and now don't need Apple ID's to push out apps from your MDM to them. Sheridan Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I think MDM/DEP is going to be the ONLY way to deploy more than a handful of ipads in the near future. Apple have given up on Configurator which was OK for small numbers. Alas, I can't get our meraki mdm to import any of our certificates (smoothwall etc) even though they are in the correct format, so I'm stuck with using configurator for a little while longer

We are due to rename it when we upgrade the site but cannot just yet due to it really messing with search engines if we were to rename it now. I'll move the thread there now. *Oh, and we learnt a very valuble lesson in forum naming becuase of this. I'd say you really do want an Apple ID for each one. Much much easier to manage, although a pain to set up in bulk. I put up a thread on here a while back called 'Ipad woes'.
