I have a hard drive that powers up, makes a some ticking noises then shuts down. It contains (as they always do!) somebodies important files. Can anyone suggest a company that deal in data recovery that they have had some success with?

Many thanks

How much money are you willing to throw at this?

I've used Kroll OnTrack on several occasions to good effect, but it isn't cheap. Each time I've used them it has been for valuable production data (once was a west end theatre show lighting desk HDD and the other was a failed raid array containing the database of customers for a national tool hire company and I wasn't responsible for the fact no backups were taken!) The charges have run to several thousand pounds.
