Transaction Details
Under the terms of the transaction, LogMeIn will pay $110 million in cash upon close for all outstanding equity interests in LastPass, with up to an additional $15 million in cash payable in contingent payments which are expected to be paid to equity holders and key employees of LastPass upon the achievement of certain milestone and retention targets over the two-year period following the closing of the transaction.

Yeah, I'm not too excited about this!

I already pay for a subscription as I think it's a fantastic product.

I think I'll be exporting all my passwords to a local password manager just to be safe. In case they do anything stupid!

Coming soon: introductory price of $40 to convert your Free account to the new Standard account because we're closing Free Accounts. Then your renewal will be $90. And if you want to cancel, you need to do it through a support ticket, there's no actual button or automated process to cancel.

I think i'll be looking at 1Password, but that looks a lot more expensive and not quite as good.

The database is kept local and only sync'd across devices using either icloud or dropbox. (no support for Google or MS as of yet.)

If the syncing is down to you, what advantage does it have over something like KeePass, which is free and open source?

Yeah, my heart sank when I read this too. We shall see, but I don't have high hopes for the $12 a year price tag.

Someone has mentioned DashLane as an equivilent alternative, but it is much more expensive and the free version isn't as comprehensive as LastPass.

Lots of options: Downloads - KeePass

It's Open Source, meaning it's more likely to be supported than a proprietary (like LastPass)

But the interoperability between the version / editions is likely to be a lot lower. Just taking a quick 5 minutes glance and the link for the Mac version isn't on the official page you need to look at one of the ports.

Using OSX and an iPad at work, Win10 and an android phone at home, and needing my passwords on all of them to be updated by the other makes it really challenging to find the consistency on an open source product.

You need a company focused on releasing across devices to get the level of synchronisation needed.

I've not seen any freeware / open source software that spans all OS developed by the same team or with compatibility between them all.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, more than happy to not have to pay for something, but i don't mind paying a reasonable fee for something if it's good and useful.

I can see what you're saying, but I'm assuming you haven't actually tried it? The reason I say that I'm using the official Windows exe, one of the unofficial Android apps and an unofficial compiled Debian package, all synced to Dropbox, without issue (admittedly I've just started using them today, so may experience issues later). The reason I went with LastPass over KeePass originally was so that I didn't have to set up syncing myself, but this has given me the nudge I needed to just do it - it took 5 minutes (you can export your LP passwords to CSV and import them in to KeePass).

I know they're mostly fringe cases, but just look at the number of devices people have written KeePass apps for - you won't get that level of compatibility from a proprietary (wouldn't be worth them developing a J2M app as they're likely to have very few customers who need it)

KeePass 2 has been around since 2007, yet KeePass 1 is still supported and improved - again, not many proprietary pieces of software that will continue support for a legacy product that long, let alone continue development on it when necessary. If KeePass 3 comes along, you can safely assume 2 will be supported for a long time and if not, you just perform an export/import to switch to the new DB format.

There's very little to be concerned about in terms of compatibility - they're all based on the same open source file format and encryption. All that really matters is keeping that DB file accessible which is always possible with Dropbox or similar (I chose Dropbox as there's no official Google Drive support for Linux AFAIK, but when I eventually set up my home server, I'll host the DB there for added security)

No i've not tried yet.

If LogMeIn give me a reason to, then i'll move away and KeePass is probably one i'll look at investing the time into.

The issue with Keepass for team use is its so easily messed up, for instance you should never SAVE in it but Synchronise, too many people hit save and then it over-writes so if your using it for team use please beat them up to never ever save but Synchronise and then it will spot changes made to the copy on the server for you to merge.

Just heard about this. What scares me is that we should really be more scared of what has already happened that we don't know about.

We're now trusting our passwords to a company thats main product is a RAT.

LogMeIn have just doubled the price of a LastPass subscription!

LastPass Premium has now doubled in price to $24 a year, which includes "emergency access, the ability to share single passwords and items with multiple people, priority tech support, advanced multi-factor authentication, LastPass for applications, and 1GB of encrypted file storage", along with all the other features of the Free tier.

LastPass Free "continues to offer access on all browsers and devices and the core LastPass password management functionality", the company said today. However, unlimited sharing and emergency access have now been removed from the Free plan, and will only be available to Premium subscribers. Those users on the Free tier "who currently have an emergency contact selected will continue to have access to this feature," LastPass added.

Arrgg! My Premium renewal is due in a week and was on my list of things to do.

ETA: Although it looks like I can probably get away with the free version now as they've moved the features around.

ETA again: Tip - If you still need the features that the Premium subscription offers, you can still renew at the older $12 rate by using the app as long as you are not using the latest version. I can confirm this worked for me on Android by restoring to the previous version.

As soon as LogMeIn bought LastPass, I moved away from them. I now use Dashlane which, if I'm honest, has a more annoying UI than LastPass but is otherwise is as good. If you buy using the link below, both you and I will get a free six months of Premium
