RSAT windows 10 - how to install

Hi all,

If you've tried this out most of your will be aware of the issue with installing RSAT on Windows 10, by that I mean it doesn't actually install(it appears to but doesn't actually install anything).

 

There are numerous posts on forums around the internet but I'll re-iterate what we've found out, it was actually my deputy NM that figured this one.

 

Windows 10 RSAT will only install if you have US language selected and the US language pack installed! So basically just change your language to US then click on the options and you are presented with the ability to download the language pack. Once this is complete you can install RSAT and it should go through happily, you know you've succeeded if it tells you you need to restart your computer to finish installing updates. If you haven't set the language correctly to US it will still appear to install correctly, however the install goes through very quickly and nothing really happens.

 

You don't need to be on domain for the RSAT install, be careful if you have a policy on your domain fixing the language setting to UK as this might be stopping things from working.

 

Once RSAT is on your system, you can change your language back to UK.

 

I would like to say I'm flabbergasted that Microsoft could have overlooked this, however most of us have seen these type of foibles before so I'm sadly not that surprised.

Does that mean I can install RSAT on to a non domain Win 10 laptop and then use this to setup policies for multiple domains? I look after a few primary schools and that would be helpful.

I've only installed Win10 Education rather than Pro, and only on my PC so far, US is the only option for the display language on that (though everything else is set to UK and I've not noticed any difference yet) so RSAT installed okay that way...

If only that really was the solution... I'm running Windows 10 Education. US English is my only language pack installed. I cannot install RSAT. It looks like it installs, as far as the installer is concerned, but on reboot, it's not there, and it shows that it failed to install. I've searched high and low on the internet, and nothing seems to be working. Win10 Edu is another version of Enterprise. Supposedly RSAT works on it. However, nothing seems to be working to get it installed. I updated from a Windows 7 enterprise box to Win10Edu. I ran a Windows 10 Education vm, and installed it clean. RSAT installs fine on a cleanly installed vm, but not on the upgraded box..

I tried exactly this - it doesn't work, so why Microsoft allows you to install the update without being joined to a domain is unclear? Unless someone can explain where I'm going wrong (top of my head) if you run AD for example, it complains you're not joined to a domain, rather than give you the option to specify a FQDN and a valid username/password.
