3s-gtech Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 RemoteSpark into a 2012 R2 Terminal Server. Licensed for 10 concurrent sessions (which seems to work quite nicely in a medium sized secondary school). Not expensive, but would be if needed for students too.
localzuk Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Remote Desktop Services with a Gateway and Web Access. Staff can use the gateway to get in on iPads/clients if they wish, or use the Web Access site on any IE browser. We pay for RDS Cals to enable this, along with out thin clients using them.

Advantages: Diskless servers (and single image to deploy to servers), HTML5 client supports pretty much ANY home device you could throw at it, unbelievably easy to deploy the client to BYOD, HDX compression (tiny bandwidth, good quality video/audio), Netscaler, monitoring options.

Citrix Con Cost for licenses (still require RDP CALS) citrix receiver can sometimes have a mind of its own / always needs updating RDS FARM Pro depending on your Microsoft agreement should be quite cheap if not included can Sync/replicate servers for DR to AZURE (hyper-v) built in client to windows (mstsc ) Con will need expensive GPU if doing graphics as remoteFX with no gpu is limited compared to CITRIX HDX with no GPU need to purchase SCVMM for all admin tasks I see your in midlands, give me a PM if you want to see live examples of citrix VS RDS farm (i'm not in sales btw) , Andy From Leicester

Davit2005 Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 only on xenserver, hyper-v not supported) I think VMWare is also supported as a Hypervisor for VDI Desktops, so you have a bit of choice and not limited to XenServer. We have XenServer for the VDI sessions and PVS servers. Then use VMWare for NetScaler, Delivery Controllers and storefront. There is a whole lot more you can do with NetScalers from what we have been told by a few people so worth some investigation.

We host our RDS Farm disk images on SSD and don't really have any issues. About 50 clients across our site.

It drives me insane; relearning everything for each release! Other than that, and the price, you can't beat it. I would say, with the client, it is best to stick to a single client if you can as it helps staff use the same procedure on different devices. we used to use server side java in the days before ipad (now depreciated) but yesterday they released server side HTML5 client 1.8 with SDK. The Chrome client (HTML5) is rather good too: just publish it in your chrome store and release it pre-configured to your users when they login.
Novalee Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 Sessions randomly disconnecting, printers not mapping, folders not redirecting etc. it's a disaster, but we have downsized staff wise recently and don't have the time to put into it. Does anyone also know of any companies who would come and implement RDP?
