hayter_123 Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 We are having exactly the same issues here with AC2. But we are now having issues with AC and cant seem to go back to using this either. When trying to supervise an existing Ipad we just get "cant restore from back up as its set to never update" - if we it allow it to update the Ipad to IOS9 its not compatible with the original AC. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? You are getting this message because you not kept AC up to date, AC version 1.7.3 supports iOS9, the only version you can get will be AC2. I've got a school that downloaded AC2 on Friday, converted all their existing 240 apps to managed distribution, converted profiles over and are now Supervising new iPads without any issues whatsoever...
hayter_123 Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 We are on 1.7.2 but cant find anything on 1.7.3. We still have a mac thats on Yosemite that is running 1.7.2 and there is no update available. Surely apple wouldnt hold back the update for people still on Yosemite? I have no idea why AC2 is being such a pain. But by the looks of this post we are not the only ones having issues
Strawdog Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 After two and half days of trying I've finally got 18 iPads, out of a set of 30, imaging (restoring a backup*, applying a profile, setting wallpaper, naming, and deploying apps**) happily - I haven't done anything differently or changed any settings, all I've done is keep repeating the same steps over and over again until it works. Despite some peoples' instance on waving the Apple pom poms I think it's pretty obvious to the majority that AC2 is badly broken and unfortunately due to Apple's misguided conviction that software they release never has any bugs (up until they release a patch to fix it) they've made it difficult to get hold of the last stable version of AC. *Including the obligatory reinstallation of iOS9 for the 20th time. **All added in via iTunes.
hayter_123 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 (edited) We can get the profiles and most of the Apps onto the Ipad. Our problem mainly is a couple of apps throwing out the unexpected error and the apps we do get onto the Ipad are requiring users to log into an Itunes account before the app will run. All Free apps have been purchased through the VPP, logged into our main purchasing account on Itunes. Yet every time we push out the apps onto the Ipad they will not run. Garacesh Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Hayter, you shouldn't have to use iTunes at all.. If you purchase the apps via VPP, you can then login to the same VPP account in Configurator 2 an push the apps out. There's no need to enter any iTunes details, at least, not that I've found.
hayter_123 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Yeah we are logged in as the VPP account in AC2. All the apps we purchased through the VPP are available for us to install. The only reason i mentioned Itunes was because some people have suggested it. But as said it didn't seem to make a difference. Still the same issue occured.
Garacesh Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 I tested some of the apps once I'd loaded them onto our iPads (Same procedure, buy them though VPP, login to AC2 with VPP account) and none of them asked me for an Apple ID? Only things I can think it could be is that your devices aren't managed, you've not disabled iCloud etc, or it's an app that forces you to use some kind of cloud storage option to save data.
hayter_123 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Yeah Im not sure whats going on really. Icloud is is 100% disabled and its every app no matter if it has a storage option or not. All devices are supervised. We currently don't use a MDM and never did in AC. Cant find any documentation saying we need to for AC2?
Garacesh Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 No, we don't use an MDM either. We do have Profile Manager, but there's a bit of a problem between our iPads and Profile Manager and they don't really talk to each other, so realistically it might as well not be there now. What restrictions are enabled, may I ask? (i.e. what's ticked?) I'll compare them to mine, see if that gives us any idea?
hayter_123 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Thanks that would be a good place to start to see if something isnt right.
Garacesh Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Quick question, are these single-user devices, or are they tablets going into a set that will be used by multiple kids throughout the day?
hayter_123 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 They are in a set that will get used by multiple students through out the day
Garacesh Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Don't allow Siri, but allow Siri when the device is locked? Confusing.. The following is my recommendations: I don't know if it makes a difference but I have 'Allow managed apps to store data in iCloud' disabled . What's the point of allowing iCloud if there's no provision to use an Apple ID on them? Our's aren't single-user so we want any kind of authentication with Apple disabled. Might be worth trying? I'd also recommend turning off allowing installs via the App Store, as again, you don't want kids installing new apps do you? (I'm presuming, you may actually want that. Ignore me if you do..) For the love of everything, turn off allow Erase All Content and Settings, installing configuration profiles and modifying account settings, else your kids can wipe the device back to factory default and remove all your restrictions. Turn off allowing modifying restrictions too. Again, same reason. You're restricting these iPads for good reason - don't let the kids be able to take that off them. 'Allow pairing with non-configurator host' lets other computers access the internal storage (such as photos), I'd recommend turning that on. I'd also recommend turning off Apple Watch pairing. Why would you want a device that isn't single-user to pair with a watch? Turn off sending diagnostic data. Extra traffic you don't need on your network. Handoff is for transferring app data between Apple devices (such as running an app on your iPad and then moving the data over to your Mac).. I doubt you'll be using it, so I'd recommend turning it off. 1
hayter_123 Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Cheers for the Advice. I will make the above changes. the erase all content etc is supervised only and the students never have the details to be able to do this. I will update once i have made the changes to see if that makes any difference to our issue Thanks for taking the time to help
Garacesh Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Cheers for the Advice. I will make the above changes. the erase all content etc is supervised only and the students never have the details to be able to do this. Forgive me if I'm wrong - and I may be wrong as I'm no expert - but doesn't 'Supervised only' mean that the setting can only be modified on a device that is supervised? For example, if you turned off that option on a device that wasn't supervised, the device would never be able to be factory reset. The point of supervising a device is to take those options away so that it needs to be linked up to the supervisor machine in order to do them? I have those options disabled on my iPads and I can still reset them by connecting them to configurator, but if I try to factory reset the device from the iPad itself, nothing happens (it looks like it's working, but when it fires back up it's exactly the same as it was before)
Strawdog Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 I believe the 'Supervised Only' are options that can only be set on supervised devices - if you assign a profile containing them to an unsupervised device the setting is ignored. Allowing modifying restrictions is useful (especially given my earlier note about Location services being automatically disabled despite being enabled within a backup) but you need to ensure the devices have a restrictions passcode set (this is included in a restored backup so only needs to be done once). By allowing restrictions to be modified you retain some flexibility over the functions of the device without allowing users to change anything. 1

So to clarify, you have rebought the free apps using managed distribution? If you use apps downloaded through iTunes, AC2 requires the Apple ID on the iPad to be same one that was used to download via iTunes, that will why you getting requests for this on the iPad?
Zoranp Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I've created blueprint, profile and backup with preinstalled apps with vpp account with one 'master' iPad. Just applying the 'master' backup to restore to an other iPad, and the AC2 downloads the latest iOS 9.0.2 AGAIN!!! In AC1.x when 'master' backup is created, it applies to all other iPads without downloading iOS to each iPad. Definitely AC2 needs to be fixed. Will keep you updated, once this iPad is finished.
Garacesh Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Yep. It seems to want to download the OS a lot, even when it already has it. I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it's some kind of provision against people jailbreaking?

Maybe it's some kind of provision against people jailbreaking? There were a few updates in quick succession, iOS 9.0.2 and a few days ago iOS 9.1 It does indeed patch a bunch of exploits used by the iOS 9 jailbreak. Plus more importantly NEW EMOJI!
Strawdog Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Found a particular apps causing us quite a lot of crashes during imaging - Lexia Core 5 Don't know if anyone else uses it but if you do it's worth taking it out of your app list and checking if AC2 is more reliable afterwards.
Sheridan Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I'm sick to death with AC2 and the lengths I've had to go to to get a simple profile to work! I've tried using Meraki instead - but I still need AC to get a connectivity profile installed. So far that works but when I join them to the Meraki and it tries to deploy our (VPP) apps all I see is 'The iTunes Store ID of the application could not be validated' for every single app. Honestly, if apple spent as much time on development as they did on licensing restrictions they would have a quality product!
