You need to set up a VPP account, yes, and presumably logging into AC2 with it will be enough, as AC2 can push out apps. I'd expect (but can't confirm) VPP apps would be a little different in how they're coded so they don't ask for an Apple ID, since you're going to be pushing out VPP apps to a Supervised device and Supervised devices don't use an Apple ID.

I'm manually naming 1 iPad! Pah hahahahah!!!!! (see now I've gone insane.)

I just got told that Configurator couldn't install an app because installing apps is restricted.. Clearly I didn't want apps installing from iTunes, why would I ever not want to be able to install apps from configurator?!

WHY ARE YOU LETTING ME RESTRICT INSTALLING APPS FROM CONFIGURATOR?! THAT IS STUPID. YOU ARE STUPID. HANG YOUR STUPID HEAD IN SHAME, APPLE!

Yeah I've gone back to 1.7.2.

To be honest, what does AC2 actually offer over 1.7.2? Its barely a half dozen extra policy settings and still no way to stop kids setting alarms!

Can stop 'em setting a passcode and deleting proxy settings. This alone is worth me spending the time to sort it out.

Spent yesterday playing with DEP, Profile manager and Configurator 2.

So far:

1) Configurator updates iOS then adds wireless profile, adds certificates, adds a proxy, joins the MDM via automatic enrollment.

2) ipad is now in supervised mode from profile manager, set timezone (because location is turned off) and set the ipad name

Things to note:

If you want to supervise with DEP/Profile manager then some things cannot be done as they require supervised mode, not all of these error.

Documentation indicates that this was possible before but no longer is without supervising the device:

Setting a name

Setting wallpaper

Spent ages trying to get the wallpaper working as it doesn't mention in configurator that it is for supervised devices only (where as other options *do* tell you).

Anyone figured out a way to remove stock apps? Is this is even possible?

Ideally I want to get rid of Find my iPhone, Find Friends, Reminders and Contacts.

The last time I looked it wasn't possible. The only thing you could do is stick them in their own folder out of the way.

Yeah but that means the kids will still be setting reminders of "lol ur a gayboy", putting other kids' details into Contacts and signing into their icloud accounts with the Find apps. Unless there's a way to hide a folder, but I doubt that..

If you use Meraki to disable their modify their account settings then iCloud becomes inactive. None of the students at my school can change the email addresses on the iPad's. I've completely locked them down. They can't even edit the wallpaper or set a passcode lol.

We don't have any third party MDM solution. Just Configurator 2 and Profile Manager.

iCloud itself is disabled through Profile settings. Will that stop apps requiring an iCloud account from working? (Not exactly an Apple Buff over here, but starting to feel a bit more knowledgeable after spending a week with Configurator 2)

I'm not an Apple buff either but I've managed to work managing over 100 in a school and stopping students from doing annoying things so far. I'd be more than happy to help you set up or go through things.

Here, I tried to look after 70 iPads for all different departments. Meraki is brilliant for the fact you can set departments, like English, History, PE and all that. You can then lock down different parts of the iPad through it. The History department here don't want the camera enabled but the PE department do. When you disable and lock down the settings in iCloud no one can enter their email address or change anything. If they head to the app store and want to download anything it prompts for a password that only I know. Genius!

Well there's your problem.

Na but srsly, Meraki's essentially free depending on how many you use and it's dead easy. Profile manager makes me sad and Config 2 makes me angry so I literally only use Meraki now and it works fine.

All that stuff is available through Configurator 2/Profile Manager. Nobody has actually ever stated a case for something a 3rd party MDM can do that Config already can't?

Also we have over 100 devices, so Meraki ain't free.

Edit: My Google-Fu is also letting me down with regards to naming devices. I've manually managed them, pushed out blueprints to them, profiles, apps, etc. Now I want to name them.

I have one device connected. I try to name it "En2-iPad01" and it doesn't let me. I try "En2-iPad-01" and it doesn't let me. I try "En2-iPad99" and it still doesn't let me (So it's not a name conflict anywhere..)

I try naming it gibberish (jytesterte - amusingly has the word 'tester' in there. Ha.) and still get the same error. What gives?!

The rename failed on "iPad".

Enter a different name than "$Name" and try again.

So Config 2 is working it seems for me, addind all the apps, wallpaper settings and names I want however...

When I open an app on the iPad it prompts for the Apple ID username and Password!

Da hell?

I keep getting "The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted [NSPOSIXErrorDomain - 0x1 (1)]

It is sooo annoying and no information exists about what this means!

Snap but only on 2 iPads - the other 28 went through fine(ish) so there's no problem with the backup, apps or profiles that I'm applying.

Anyone worked out a way of restoring a backup (to apply an app folder structure) without wiping and installing a fresh copy of iOS every bloody time?

I can only get around the error

An underlying service (ACUInternetServiceContext) unexpectedly quit. [ConfigurationUtility.error - 0x68 (104)]

by installing apps one at a time. Great.

Yep, getting that here, too.

I just (no idea how) managed to deploy a set of 16. Pushed out all the apps to them. Woohoo!

That was English Set 2. (Still haven't managed to name them..) So I duplicated the blueprint, created a new .mobileconfig so that it goes in the right Device Group in Profile Manager.. Connect up the next 16 (English set 1).. Apply blueprint.. Failure.

WUUUUUUUUT
