Recommend a HP switch to replace a 3com 2950

Needing to upgrade a 3com 2950 that is currently providing the fibre link back to our main server cabinet.

I have been replacing all our old 3com switches with HP so could anyone advise on what they have.

We currently have HP v1910 for our Edge switches or maybe the 2500 Series? would another one of these be sufficient? I'm looking in around the £500 region.

Take a look at the HP Switch Selector:

The 2510 Series is no more, was replaced with the 2530 series:

 

ProCurve 2530-48G (J9775A) 52 Port Switch < GIG 10/100/1000

 

ProCurve 2530-48 (J9781A) 52 Port Switch < 10/100

 

I'm not too keen on the lower end hp switches (v1910 etc)

The 1920 (which replaced the 1910) should be adequate at that price point.

 

The HP 1910 was the same switch as the 3com 2950.

 

You have to consider your peak throughput requirements though. Will 1-4Gb/sec be sufficient during logon/off? (It takes 80 Seconds for 100 students to each save a 100Mbyte file back to a server when they are attached to a stack that has only a 1Gbit/sec link to back to the servers. i.e. the users click save and then will see the spinning disc of doom to 80 seconds!)

The 1920 is of course a Comware switch whereas the 2530 is Procurve (BTW the 1950 is also comware but I don't thing anyone's found a route to the CLI yet unlike the 1920). So apart from OS preferences it's down to port counts, appetite for 10G and performance. Like an earlier poster suggested, the HP Switch selector is a good place to start.
